Delhi to Nainital Cab Route and Lake City Escape

Day 1 · Sat, May 9
Nainital

Drive from Delhi to Nainital

  1. Cab transfer: Delhi → Nainital via NH9 — Delhi/Noida/Gurgaon pickup to Nainital, ~6.5–7.5 hours; depart as early as possible next time for lighter traffic, and plan a short breakfast stop near Moradabad/Rampur before the hills.
  2. Aerial Ropeway to Snow View Point — Mallital, ~1 hour; a classic first-look ride over Naini Lake that gives you an easy mountain arrival with big views.
  3. Naini Lake promenade & boating — Mallital, ~1–1.5 hours; the lakefront is the heart of Nainital and a relaxed way to settle in after the drive.
  4. Naina Devi Temple — Mallital, ~45 minutes; an important lakeside shrine and one of the town’s most visited spiritual stops.
  5. Cafe LakeSide / Machan Restaurant — Mallital, ₹500–900 per person, ~1 hour; good for an early dinner with familiar North Indian and multi-cuisine options close to the lake.
  6. Tiffin Top walk or taxi viewpoint visit — Ayarpatta, ~1.5 hours; if energy allows, finish with sunset views over the valley before heading back to your hotel.

Morning: Delhi to Nainital by NH9

Start early from Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, or Faridabad and head out on NH9 via Moradabad, Rampur, Haldwani, and Kathgodam for the smoothest run to Nainital. The drive is usually 6.5–7.5 hours, but on weekends I’d still budget a little extra for traffic around the city exits and one short breakfast stop near Moradabad or Rampur. A sedan works fine for most families, but if you’re travelling with elders or a bigger group, an SUV is more comfortable on the last uphill stretch. Once you reach Mallital, expect hill-town traffic and limited parking near the lake, so it’s best to arrive, check in, and keep the car with you only when needed.

Late Morning to Afternoon: Snow View Point, Naini Lake, and Naina Devi Temple

Take the Aerial Ropeway to Snow View Point first, while the weather is clearer and the queues are usually shorter; the ride itself is part of the fun and gives you that classic first glimpse of the lake city from above. From Mallital, it’s an easy start to your Nainital day, and the full experience usually takes about an hour including waiting time; tickets are generally in the affordable tourist range, though prices can change seasonally. After coming back down, spend a relaxed hour or so on the Naini Lake promenade—this is the part of town where you should slow down, walk the edge, and do a short boating session if the weather is calm. Boats typically operate through the day, and on busy weekends you may wait a bit, so don’t rush. A short walk away is Naina Devi Temple, which is one of the most important stops in town; dress modestly, be prepared for a small queue during peak hours, and keep some cash handy for offerings and parking if your cab drops you nearby.

Evening: Dinner at Cafe LakeSide / Machan Restaurant and a quick Tiffin Top finish

For an early dinner, head to Cafe LakeSide or Machan Restaurant in Mallital; both are convenient when you want something dependable after a full travel day, with familiar North Indian and multi-cuisine options in the ₹500–900 per person range. If you’re travelling with family, this is the easiest low-stress meal before sunset. If everyone still has energy, finish with a Tiffin Top walk or taxi viewpoint visit in Ayarpatta—the view is worth it, especially around sunset, and the round trip usually takes about 1.5 hours depending on whether you walk part of the way or take a vehicle closer to the viewpoint. For the journey back toward Delhi, plan an early next-day departure rather than a late-night exit; the downhill route back through Kathgodam and Haldwani is best started after breakfast, when mountain traffic is lighter and the plains stretch ahead feel much easier to cover.
