  4. Qasr Al Hosn — Al Hosn — The city’s historic heart gives you an excellent introduction to Abu Dhabi’s story and architecture without overdoing the first day, late afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Corniche Beach — Corniche — Finish with a sunset walk along the waterfront and skyline views, a gentle way to recover from travel and adjust to the time zone, evening, ~1 hour.

Arrival and first transfer

From Abu Dhabi International Airport, take a taxi or ride-hail straight to Al Maryah Island; it’s the smoothest first move after a flight, usually about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, and you’ll avoid the stress of figuring out parking on day one. A cab to the island typically lands somewhere around AED 90–130, and the ride gives you an easy first look at the city’s wide roads and sleek skyline. If you’re arriving with bags and just want to get oriented fast, this is the way to do it.

Lunch and a soft landing

Start at The Galleria Al Maryah Island for a relaxed lunch and an unhurried stroll. It’s one of the best air-conditioned places in Abu Dhabi to ease into the trip, with plenty of good sit-down options and café stops if you want to linger; expect AED 70–150 per person depending on where you eat. After lunch, wander a little without trying to “do” too much — the mall is connected to the waterfront and feels especially pleasant in the afternoon heat. Taxis between Al Maryah Island and Al Khalidiyah are quick and cheap, usually 10–15 minutes.

Afternoon into the city’s old core

Head over to Café Arabia in Al Khalidiyah for a late lunch, coffee, or just a reset before the sightseeing part of the day. It’s one of those places that feels genuinely local, with shaded seating and a slower pace that suits an arrival day; budget around AED 60–100 per person. From there, continue to Qasr Al Hosn in Al Hosn, the historic heart of the city. Give yourself about 1.5 hours here: the fort, exhibits, and surrounding plaza make for a good introduction to Abu Dhabi’s story without overwhelming you on day one. Entry is usually around AED 30–40, and it’s best to go later in the afternoon when the light is softer and the heat starts to ease.

Sunset by the water

Wrap up with a gentle evening walk at Corniche Beach. This is the classic first-night Abu Dhabi move: skyline views, sea breeze, and an easy way to shake off the travel day. If you want, grab a short stroll along the waterfront promenade rather than pushing for a full beach session; it’s more about the atmosphere than the swim. The area is free to enjoy, with paid beach access only if you want extra facilities. Aim to arrive before sunset, then take a taxi back to your hotel afterward — from Corniche most central stays are only 10–20 minutes away, and it’s the simplest way to end the day without overplanning.
