Four-Day Itinerary for Pondicherry in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Promenade Beach
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Pondicherry Airport

    Start your morning with a lovely walk at Promenade Beach, a popular tourist destination and a landmark of Pondicherry. Admire the scenic beauty of the Bay of Bengal, enjoy the soothing sea breeze and serene atmosphere. Afterward, head to Le Cafe, a beachside restaurant that offers delicious breakfast and coffee. In the afternoon, visit the French War Memorial, dedicated to soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. In the evening, stroll through the Old Lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic view of the coastline from the top.

  2. Day 2: Auroville
    30 minutes (12.3 miles) from Promenade Beach

    Begin your morning with a visit to Auroville, an experimental township founded by Mirra Alfassa (The Mother). Explore the Matri Mandir, a unique structure that serves as a meditation center and a symbol of human unity. Visit the Aurobindo Ashram, where Sri Aurobindo lived and taught his philosophy of Integral Yoga. Have lunch at one of the many cafes in Auroville, offering organic food and a laid-back vibe. In the afternoon, head to the Pondicherry Museum, which houses a collection of rare artifacts, sculptures, and paintings. In the evening, enjoy a boat ride at Chunnambar Boat House, located on the banks of the River Chunnambar.

  3. Day 3: Paradise Beach and Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple
    20 minutes (5.6 miles) from Auroville

    On your third day, visit Paradise Beach, a secluded beach located on the Chunnambar backwaters. Take a boat ride to reach the beach. The beach offers a serene ambiance, calm waters and is an ideal place for sunbathing. Have lunch at the nearby restaurants that offer fresh seafood. After lunch, head to Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple, a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The temple is renowned for its magnificent architecture, intricate carvings, and a golden chariot that is used for processions. In the evening, visit the Botanical Garden, a lush green garden with exotic flora, fauna, and a musical fountain show.

  4. Day 4: Gingee Fort and Matrimandir
    1 hour 20 minutes (39.4 miles) from Paradise Beach

    On your last day, visit the Gingee Fort, a majestic fort located on a hilltop that dates back to the 16th century. The Fort is known for its grand architecture, intricate carvings, and a spectacular view of the surrounding hills. Have lunch at the nearby restaurants that serve local cuisine. In the afternoon, head back to Auroville and visit the Matrimandir, the heart of Auroville. The Matrimandir is a golden dome-shaped structure, surrounded by beautiful gardens and peaceful surroundings. The meditation chambers inside the Matrimandir offer a unique experience of self-realization. In the evening, head back to Promenade Beach and enjoy the nightlife.

Recommendations:

If you have an extra day, you can visit Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its rock-cut temples and sculptures. You can also take a day trip to Chidambaram, a temple town, famous for its Nataraja Temple. To maximize your fun, try the local cuisine, go for shopping at the Sunday Market, and attend cultural events at the Alliance Francaise.
