Day 1 · Wed, May 20
Gangtok

Gangtok city base

  1. Tashi View Point — Tashi View Point area — Start with a panoramic city-and-Himalaya outlook to set the tone for Gangtok, with the best light in the early morning; morning, ~1 hour.
  2. Enchey Monastery — Upper Gangtok — A peaceful stop nearby with colorful prayer halls and a classic Gangtok monastery feel; late morning, ~1 hour.
  3. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology — Deorali — Excellent for Tibetan culture, thangka art, and local history, and it pairs well with the monastery circuit; late morning, ~1.5 hours.
  4. Baker's Cafe — MG Marg — A relaxed lunch break on the main promenade, good for coffee, pastries, and people-watching; lunch, ~1 hour; approx. ₹400–700 per person.
  5. The Square — MG Marg — A central, easygoing stop for an afternoon snack or drink right on the city’s most walkable stretch; afternoon, ~1 hour; approx. ₹500–900 per person.
  6. Roll House — MG Marg — End the day with a casual local bite and a quick, satisfying dinner in the heart of town; evening, ~45 minutes; approx. ₹200–400 per person.

Morning

Start early at Tashi View Point while the air is still crisp and the light is soft — that’s when you’re most likely to catch Kanchenjunga if the sky is clear. It’s about a 20–30 minute drive from central Gangtok, usually best done by taxi or your hotel’s arranged cab, and you’ll want to leave by 6:30–7:00 AM to beat the crowds and haze. Expect a simple viewpoint setup, tea stalls nearby, and a very photogenic first look at the city spilling down the hillside. From there, continue up to Enchey Monastery in Upper Gangtok, another short cab ride of roughly 10–15 minutes; it’s a calm, compact monastery, so take your time walking the prayer wheels and stepping quietly inside the shrine hall. Dress modestly, remove shoes where requested, and keep about an hour here so the visit feels unrushed.

Late Morning to Lunch

Next head toward Namgyal Institute of Tibetology in Deorali, about 15–20 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. This is one of the best places in town for understanding Sikkim’s Tibetan Buddhist heritage, with excellent collections of manuscripts, thangkas, and religious art; plan around 1.5 hours so you can browse without rushing. Entry is usually very affordable, and the institute is generally open during daytime hours, though it’s wise to check for weekly closures or exhibit restrictions before you go. After that, descend to MG Marg for lunch at Baker's Cafe, where the baked goods, sandwiches, coffee, and easy seating make it one of the nicest low-key breaks in Gangtok. Budget roughly ₹400–700 per person, and if the weather is good, aim for a table where you can watch the promenade drift by — it’s one of the best people-watching spots in town.

Afternoon and Evening

Stay on MG Marg and keep the pace loose: The Square is a good follow-up if you want a mid-afternoon snack, tea, or a drink without leaving the center of town. It’s an easy walk from Baker's Cafe, and that whole stretch is fully pedestrianized, so this is the simplest part of the day — just wander, browse a few shops, and let the hill-town atmosphere do the work. Expect to spend around ₹500–900 per person depending on what you order, and don’t be surprised if you linger longer than planned; this is where Gangtok naturally slows down. End with dinner at Roll House, another short stroll along MG Marg, for a casual, very local finish: hot rolls, momos, and quick comfort food that’s satisfying after a full sightseeing day. It’s usually the most practical dinner stop in the center, with roughly ₹200–400 per person, and after that you can either walk a bit more on the lit-up promenade or head back by taxi to rest before tomorrow.
