One Day Car Itinerary in Visakhapatnam

Day 1 · Sun, Jun 21
Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam coastal city day

  1. Kailasagiri — Kailasagiri Hill area — Start with the city’s classic viewpoint for sweeping bay-and-city panoramas; go early to beat heat and haze. Timing: morning, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach) — Beach Road / central coast — A relaxed drive down to the waterfront for a promenade stroll, sea breeze, and photo stops along the curve of the bay. Timing: late morning, ~1 hour.
  3. INS Kursura Submarine Museum — RK Beach — A quick but memorable naval-history stop inside the decommissioned submarine, best paired with the nearby beach walk. Timing: late morning, ~45 minutes.
  4. The Shack — RK Beach / Beach Road — A convenient seaside restaurant for lunch with broad menu options and a good oceanfront break; expect approx. ₹600–1,200 per person. Timing: lunch, ~1 hour.
  5. Borra Caves — Araku Valley road side trip from Visakhapatnam — A dramatic geological excursion for stalactites, lighting, and a change of pace from the coast; leave with enough buffer for road time. Timing: afternoon, ~2 hours including drive segment planning.

Morning

Start early at Kailasagiri while the city is still soft with morning light; that’s when the views are clearest and the climb feels easy. From central Visakhapatnam, it’s usually a 20–30 minute drive depending on where you’re staying, and parking is straightforward near the viewpoint area. Go by 8:00 AM if you can, because after that the haze and heat start building fast. Spend about 1.5 hours here for the sweeping look over RK Beach, the harbor curve, and the green hills behind the city—this is the classic Vizag postcard view for a reason.

From there, drive down to Ramakrishna Beach (RK Beach) along Beach Road, which is one of the nicest city drives in Andhra. It’s only about 10–15 minutes from Kailasagiri, and the route itself is part of the experience: sea on one side, city life on the other, with lots of little photo pull-offs. Take a slow walk on the promenade, keep an eye out for local morning walkers and cyclists, and don’t rush it. The beach is more for atmosphere than swimming, so think breezy, relaxed, and people-watching rather than a full beach day.

Late Morning to Lunch

Stay right by the waterfront for INS Kursura Submarine Museum, which sits on RK Beach and is one of those only-in-Vizag stops that’s quick but memorable. Plan around 45 minutes; the interiors are narrow, so move steadily and go earlier if you dislike waiting in a queue. Entry is usually modest, and it pairs perfectly with the beach walk because you’re not adding any extra driving. After that, head next door for lunch at The Shack on Beach Road—a very convenient place to sit down, cool off, and reset before the afternoon. Expect roughly ₹600–1,200 per person depending on what you order; it’s a good choice for seafood, continental plates, and a relaxed sea-view break.

Afternoon

After lunch, keep the car ready for the longer run out to Borra Caves. This is where the day shifts from coast to hills, and the drive is part of the payoff: you’ll move inland toward the Araku Valley route, with the landscape gradually turning greener and cooler. Allow generous buffer time from the city because road conditions and traffic can vary, and you don’t want to feel rushed at the cave site itself. Once there, spend about 2 hours exploring the limestone formations and lit chambers—comfortable shoes help, and the steps can be slippery in places, so take it easy. If you’re leaving Vizag in the evening, start the return early enough to avoid arriving back too late; the hill-road drive is much nicer in daylight, and if you have a little energy left, a final coffee or snack near Beach Road before heading back is the easiest way to close the day.
