Trivandrum Itinerary from Maldives Starting August 11, 2026

Day 1 · Tue, Aug 11
Thiruvananthapuram

Arrival in Trivandrum

  1. Journey: Maldives → Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) — Thiruvananthapuram — Fly in from the Maldives, then take a taxi/ride-hailing to the city; allow ~1.5–3 hours total door-to-door depending on connection and immigration, with arrival into central Trivandrum easiest by late afternoon/evening.
  2. Kuthira Malika (Puthen Malika Palace) — East Fort — A classic first stop for the city’s royal history and carved teak architecture, best reached right after arrival since it’s close to the old city core; afternoon, ~1 hour.
  3. Shangumugham Beach — Shangumugham — Ease into Trivandrum with a relaxed seaside walk and sunset views near the airport side of town; late afternoon/early evening, ~1.5 hours.
  4. Zam Zam Restaurant — Palayam — A long-running local favorite for Kerala and North Indian staples, ideal for an easy first meal in the city; dinner, ~45–60 minutes, approx. ₹250–600 per person.
  5. Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple surroundings — East Fort — Even if you don’t enter, the temple precinct gives a strong sense of the city’s spiritual center and is a natural short evening stop after dinner; evening, ~30–45 minutes.

Arrival and first impressions

Fly into Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) from the Maldives and plan for about 1.5–3 hours door to door once you factor in the flight, immigration, baggage, and the short ride into town. From the airport, a prepaid taxi or ride-hailing cab is the easiest option to East Fort or Palayam; traffic is usually manageable compared with bigger Indian cities, but I’d still aim to land by late afternoon if you want the day to feel relaxed. If you’re carrying luggage, keep it light on this first day because you’ll likely be moving between the old city core and the beach side before dinner.

Afternoon in the old city

Start with Kuthira Malika (Puthen Malika Palace) in East Fort, which is one of the nicest “welcome to Trivandrum” stops because it gives you the city’s royal history without demanding too much energy after travel. The carved teak details and horse motifs are the real draw, and an hour is usually enough to look around at an easy pace; entry is typically modest, and it’s best to keep some cash handy just in case. From there, it’s an easy taxi or auto-rickshaw hop across town to Shangumugham Beach, which sits near the airport side and works beautifully for a slow, unhurried reset after flying. Go late afternoon into sunset, around 4:30–6:30 pm, for the cooler breeze, snack carts, and a classic local beach crowd.

Dinner and evening stroll

For dinner, head to Zam Zam Restaurant in Palayam, a dependable first-night choice if you want something familiar, filling, and fast. Expect Kerala meals, biryani, parotta, and North Indian basics, with most people spending roughly ₹250–600 per person depending on what you order; it’s casual, busy, and very much the kind of place that keeps a steady local following. After dinner, make a short evening stop at the surroundings of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in East Fort rather than trying to overdo the night. Even from outside, the precinct has a strong sense of place after dark, with the temple towers and the surrounding streets giving you a feel for the city’s spiritual center; 30–45 minutes is enough. From Palayam or East Fort, a quick auto or cab gets you back to your hotel easily, and if you’re still awake, the area around MG Road and Statue is the simplest place for one last quiet drive before turning in.
