7-Day Family Friendly Itinerary: Dambulla, Trincomalee, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Bentota - July 2023

  1. Day 1: Dambulla
    30 minutes (13.3 km) from Sigiriya

    In the morning, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient art and architecture. In the afternoon, take a nature walk through the nearby Sigiriya Forest Reserve. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan meal at a local restaurant.

  2. Day 2: Trincomalee
    3 hours (130 km) from Dambulla

    Start the day off by visiting the famous Koneswaram Temple and the Fort Frederick. In the afternoon, head to the beautiful Marble Beach for some sun and surf. In the evening, head to a local seafood restaurant to try some of the freshest seafood in Sri Lanka.

  3. Day 3: Kandy
    4.5 hours (200 km) from Trincomalee

    Begin the day by visiting the Temple of the Tooth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. In the afternoon, take a stroll through the beautiful Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. In the evening, catch a traditional Kandyan dance performance at the Kandy Cultural Centre.

  4. Day 4: Nuwara Eliya
    3.5 hours (95 km) from Kandy

    Start the day off by visiting a tea plantation and factory to learn about the process of making the world-famous Ceylon tea. In the afternoon, head to the beautiful Gregory Lake for a boat ride and some relaxation. In the evening, enjoy a warm cup of tea by the fireplace at your hotel.

  5. Day 5: Bentota
    6 hours (220 km) from Nuwara Eliya

    Begin the day by taking a scenic drive along the southern coast of Sri Lanka to Bentota. In the afternoon, take a boat ride on the Bentota River and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. In the evening, enjoy a sunset dinner on the beach.

  6. Day 6: Bentota

    Spend the day relaxing on the beach or taking part in water sports such as surfing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. In the evening, head to a local bar for some live music and drinks.

  7. Day 7: Bentota

    Take a day trip to the nearby city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient fortifications and colonial architecture. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant.

Recommendations:

Consider taking a side trip to the nearby Yala National Park, one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see leopards and other wildlife.
