Morning

Start early in Icherisheher (Old City) while the lanes are still calm and the heat hasn’t settled in yet. This is the best way to feel Baku before the day gets busy: walk through the thick stone walls, peek into quiet courtyards, and wander past old caravanserais and little craft shops before they open fully. Give yourself about 1.5 hours here; most of it is free to explore, though a few small museums and entry points may charge a modest fee. Comfortable shoes help, because the limestone streets can be uneven and slippery in spots. From the center of the city, a taxi or Yandex usually takes 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Late Morning to Lunch

Next, head to Maiden Tower, which is right in the Old City and easy to combine without rushing. It’s worth the climb for the view alone—especially for a first day in Baku, when the contrast between the ancient walls and the modern skyline really lands. Plan on around an hour total, including the short queue if it’s busy; entry is usually in the low single digits in AZN, and the stairs are steep and narrow, so it’s not ideal if you’re uncomfortable with enclosed spaces. When you’re ready for lunch, make your way to Firuze Restaurant near Fountain Square, about 10 minutes away by taxi or a pleasant 15–20 minute walk if the weather is kind. It’s a solid local choice for Azerbaijani basics like dolma, kebabs, and a good soup or salad, with lunch typically landing around AZN 20–35 per person.

Afternoon Exploring

After lunch, slow things down on Nizami Street. This is Baku’s main pedestrian promenade and the easiest place to do a proper city-center wander: coffee stops, shops, ice cream, people-watching, and a very easy rhythm after the Old City. Give yourself 1.5 hours, but don’t feel pressured to “do” anything here beyond strolling; the charm is in the atmosphere. A café break is a good idea if the July sun is strong, and most places along here stay open well into the evening. From Fountain Square, you can just walk straight into Nizami Street without needing transport, which is one reason locals use this whole area as a low-effort afternoon base.

Evening

For the late afternoon, head to the Heydar Aliyev Center in Nasimi. This is one of those places where the building is the attraction: the flowing white curves, the huge interior spaces, and the clean photo angles look especially good near golden hour. Set aside 1.5–2 hours if you want enough time for the exterior, the interior exhibits, and a relaxed photo stop; tickets are usually around AZN 15–20, and it’s open later than most museums, but check the exact hour that day. Finish at the Flame Towers viewpoint in Sabayil, where the city opens up beautifully after sunset. A taxi from the center takes about 10–15 minutes up toward the hill, and it’s best to arrive just before dusk so you get both the daylight view over the bay and the lights coming on across Icherisheher. If you’re heading back afterward, this is a good final stop before a short ride home.
