Beijing Itinerary Outline

Day 1 · Mon, Jul 6
Beijing

Beijing city core

  1. Temple of Heaven — Dongcheng — Start with Beijing’s most iconic imperial park and temple complex, best in the cooler morning light; ~2 hours.
  2. Qianmen Street — Qianmen/Dongcheng — Walk this restored historic avenue for classic old-Beijing atmosphere and easy sightseeing; late morning, ~1 hour.
  3. Da Dong Roast Duck (Qianmen branch) — Qianmen/Dongcheng — A well-known place for Beijing roast duck and a polished lunch; lunch, ~1.5 hours, approx. ¥200–350 per person.
  4. Tiananmen Square — City Center/Dongcheng — Visit the vast civic heart of Beijing and take in the main monuments on foot; afternoon, ~1 hour.
  5. The Palace Museum (Forbidden City) — Dongcheng — The city’s marquee imperial site, with enough scale and history to anchor the day; afternoon into early evening, ~2.5–3 hours.
  6. Jingshan Park — North of the Forbidden City, Dongcheng — Finish with the classic panoramic view over the Forbidden City rooftops at sunset; evening, ~1 hour.

Morning

Start early at Temple of Heaven while the air is still relatively cool and the light is soft on the blue-roofed halls. Get there near opening time, around 6:00–7:00 a.m., if you can — this is when the park feels most Beijing: retirees doing tai chi, locals playing music, and very few tour groups. Entry is usually around ¥15–35 depending on whether you want the main park only or the full complex. From central Beijing, the easiest approach is by subway to Tiantan Dongmen or Tiantan Ximen, then a short walk inside the park. Give yourself about 2 hours to see the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the long, tree-shaded paths without rushing.

Late Morning to Lunch

From there, head north to Qianmen Street, which is easiest by taxi or subway and works well as a gentle transition from temple grounds into old-city street life. It’s touristy, yes, but still worth walking once for the restored façades, side lanes, and classic Beijing atmosphere. Keep an eye out for side alleys off the main drag — that’s where the street feels a little less staged. For lunch, Da Dong Roast Duck (Qianmen branch) is a strong choice if you want a more polished roast duck meal without hunting around the city. Book ahead if possible, expect roughly ¥200–350 per person, and plan on about 1.5 hours so you can enjoy the duck properly rather than treating it like a quick stop.

Afternoon

After lunch, make your way on foot or by a short taxi hop to Tiananmen Square, where the scale of the city really hits you. Security checks can slow things down, so keep your passport handy and don’t be surprised by queues. It’s best approached as a walk-through rather than a long stop: around an hour is enough to take in the open space, the Monument to the People's Heroes, and the edges of the square before continuing into The Palace Museum. For the Forbidden City, pre-book tickets in advance if you can — same-day entry is often not possible in peak season — and expect about 2.5 to 3 hours just to do the central route properly. The beauty here is in the pacing: courtyards, gates, rooflines, and the slow sense of moving deeper into imperial Beijing.

Evening

Wrap up the day at Jingshan Park, just north of the Forbidden City, which is one of the best low-effort, high-reward viewpoints in the city. The climb is short but a little steep, so wear decent shoes; sunset is the sweet spot, especially if the sky is clear and the rooftops below pick up that warm late light. Entry is usually only a few yuan, and it’s a very easy final stop after a long museum day. From here, it’s simple to leave by subway or taxi depending on where you’re staying — I’d give yourself a little extra buffer at dusk, since the area can get busy and traffic around the historic center thickens fast.
