Folly Beach, SC

Beach stay in Folly Beach

  1. Folly Beach Pier — Folly Beach oceanfront — Start with the iconic landmark for an easy beach orientation, fishing, and a long Atlantic view; late morning, ~1 hour.
  2. Folly Beach County Park — west end of Folly Beach — Head here for a cleaner, less crowded beach stretch and dune scenery; midday, ~2 hours.
  3. Lost Dog Cafe — center Folly Beach — A classic casual lunch stop with breakfast-all-day vibes and strong beach-town energy; lunch, ~1 hour, about $15–25 per person.
  4. Washout Beach Access — south end of Folly Beach — Walk or relax at one of the island’s best-known surf spots and watch the waves roll in; afternoon, ~1 hour.
  5. The Crab Shack — Folly Beach — Finish with a relaxed seafood dinner and sunset-adjacent waterfront feel; evening, ~1.5 hours, about $25–45 per person.

Late Morning

Ease into the island at Folly Beach Pier, the easiest place to get your bearings on Folly. It’s an iconic stretch of the oceanfront, and even if you’re not fishing, the views down the beach and out over the Atlantic are worth the stop. Plan on about an hour here; parking nearby can be tight in summer, so arrive with patience and a few dollars for paid parking if you find a spot. If you want a quieter moment, walk just a little north or south of the pier before you settle in.

Midday

From there, head west to Folly Beach County Park, which is one of the best spots on the island for a more relaxed beach experience. The dunes feel a little cleaner and more open here, and it’s a nice reset after the busier pier area. The park usually charges an entry fee in season, and it’s a smart choice if you want restrooms, rinsing stations, and a more comfortable setup for a couple hours of beach time. Afterward, make the short drive or bike ride back toward the center of Folly for lunch at Lost Dog Cafe; expect beach-town casual with hearty breakfast-all-day plates, sandwiches, and a relaxed crowd. Budget about $15–25 per person, and don’t be surprised if there’s a wait around lunch.

Afternoon to Evening

After lunch, make your way south to Washout Beach Access, one of Folly’s most famous surf breaks and a great place to watch the energy of the island without needing to commit to a full beach setup. It’s a nice walk-and-watch stop, especially if the waves are up, and it gives you a different feel than the more family-friendly stretches. Then wind down with dinner at The Crab Shack, where you can keep it easy with seafood, cold drinks, and that laid-back Folly vibe locals actually like. Plan on roughly $25–45 per person depending on what you order, and aim to arrive a little before sunset if you want the best atmosphere. Parking and traffic can back up in the late afternoon, so give yourself extra time moving between the south end and dinner.
