3-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary from Chennai to Kedarnath in September 2023

  1. Day 1: Chennai to Haridwar
    Flight duration: 3 hours 10 minutes. Haridwar is 37 km from Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun.

    Start your journey from Chennai to Haridwar. Check into your hotel and freshen up before heading out to visit Har ki Pauri, a famous ghat on the banks of the Ganges River. Take a dip in the holy water and witness the evening aarti ceremony. In the afternoon, visit Mansa Devi Temple, located on top of Bilwa Parvat, and enjoy the scenic views of the city. In the evening, explore the local markets and enjoy some street food.

  2. Day 2: Haridwar to Guptkashi
    Distance: 203km; Time: 7 hours 30 minutes

    After breakfast, drive to Guptkashi. On the way, stop at Devprayag, the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, and visit the Raghunath Temple. Continue the drive and visit the ancient Triyuginarayan Temple, which is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. Enjoy the scenic views of the mountains along the way. Check into your hotel in Guptkashi and spend the evening at leisure.

  3. Day 3: Guptkashi to Kedarnath
    Distance: 38km; Time: 2 hours 30 minutes

    After an early breakfast, start your journey to Kedarnath. You can reach Gaurikund by car and then trek to Kedarnath, which is approximately 16km from Gaurikund. Alternatively, you can take a helicopter ride from Phata to Kedarnath. At Kedarnath, visit the Kedarnath Temple, one of the four sacred shrines of Hinduism and pay your respects to Lord Shiva. Enjoy the scenic views of the Himalayas and the Mandakini River. Later, trek down to Gaurikund or take a helicopter ride back to Phata. Drive back to Guptkashi and spend the evening at leisure.

Other attractions that you may consider visiting include the Chandi Devi Temple and Maya Devi Temple in Haridwar, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the Kashi Vishalakshi Temple in Uttarkashi, and the Triyuginarayan Temple in Rudraprayag. You can also take a side trip to Badrinath, one of the four sacred shrines of Hinduism.

To maximize your fun, you can also go camping and trekking in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, rafting in the Ganges River, and exploring the local villages. Don't forget to try the local cuisine, which includes dishes such as Kachmauli, Bal Mithai, and Aloo ke Gutke.
