Lucknow Trip Itinerary

Day 1 · Tue, Jul 28
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Old Lucknow heritage

  1. Bara Imambara — Chowk/Old Lucknow — Start with Lucknow’s grandest monument and the famous bhul-bhulaiya maze; go early to beat heat and crowds, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Rumi Darwaza — Chowk/Old Lucknow — A quick heritage stop just nearby for one of the city’s most iconic gateways, ~20 minutes.
  3. Chota Imambara — Hussainabad, Old Lucknow — Visit this beautifully detailed shrine and its reflected facade, a strong second heritage stop after Bara Imambara, ~1 hour.
  4. Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden — Kaiserbagh/Charbagh side — A lighter-paced mid-day break with greenery and old-city context, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Dastarkhwan — Shah Najaf Road, Hazratganj — Go for a classic Lucknowi meal of kebabs and biryani; expect about ₹400–800 per person, ~1 hour.
  6. Tunday Kababi — Aminabad — End with a famous local snack stop for galawati kebabs and parathas; budget about ₹200–500 per person, ~45 minutes.

Morning

Start early at Bara Imambara in Chowk—ideally by 8:00–8:30 AM, before the heat and school groups build up. This is the day’s headline stop, so give yourself the full 1.5 hours to wander the huge courtyard, the arched halls, and the famous bhul-bhulaiya maze with a guide if you want the fun of hearing the old stories. Entry is usually budget-friendly, and the place gets busier as the morning goes on, so it’s worth arriving right at opening. From here, Rumi Darwaza is an easy walk or a very short auto ride away, and it’s best treated as a quick photo-and-stroll stop—20 minutes is enough unless you get caught up in the surrounding lanes. The old-city streets around Chowk are half the charm, so don’t rush past the bazaars and stalls if you have a little extra time.

Late Morning to Lunch

Continue to Chota Imambara in Hussainabad, about 10–15 minutes away by auto from Bara Imambara depending on traffic. It’s smaller but far more delicate in detail, and the reflection views are especially lovely if the water and light are cooperating. Plan about an hour here, and keep an eye on the weather—Lucknow in July is humid and sticky, so an umbrella or cap helps. After that, head toward the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden on the Kaiserbagh/Charbagh side for a slower, greener break; it works nicely as a palate cleanser after the heavy heritage architecture, and 1.5 hours is enough for a relaxed walk without overdoing it. From the old city, take a cab or auto rather than trying to stitch it all together on foot—the distances are short on a map, but the lanes and traffic make surface travel the practical choice.

Afternoon Exploring

By lunch, make your way to Dastarkhwan on Shah Najaf Road in Hazratganj for the classic Lucknowi sit-down meal. Order kebabs and biryani, keep an eye on portions because the food is rich, and expect around ₹400–800 per person depending on what you choose. If you’re visiting in peak meal hours, there may be a wait, so don’t plan this too tightly; this is the kind of stop that should feel unhurried. After lunch, you can let the day breathe a little—Hazratganj is an easy place to linger, grab tea, or just cool off before the final food stop.

Evening

End at Tunday Kababi in Aminabad for the iconic Lucknow snack experience: soft galawati kebabs with parathas, usually ₹200–500 per person, and about 45 minutes is plenty unless you want to order more and sit awhile. This works best as an early evening stop, before the area gets too crowded with dinner traffic. If you’re heading back afterward, leave around 8:00–8:30 PM so you’re not stuck in the thick of Aminabad traffic; a cab is the simplest way out, especially if you’re carrying shopping bags or feeling the full effect of a very rich Lucknow day.
