Skyline Loop to Myrtle Falls, Reflection Lake, and Snow Lake Hiking Trip

Day 1 · Sat, Apr 24
Paradise, WA

Skyline Loop and Myrtle Falls hike

  1. Paradise Inn parking area — Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park; arrive by 6:30 AM via the Nisqually Entrance and park near the visitor center or lodge, allowing ~20 minutes for gear, restrooms, and trail conditions. Confirm the road is open: late-April snow and weather may require chains or may close Paradise Road.

  2. Skyline Trail clockwise to Golden Gate Trail — Paradise; begin hiking around 7:00 AM, following Skyline clockwise and branching toward Golden Gate, ~2.5–3 miles and 2–2.5 hours in spring snow conditions. Use traction devices and carry navigation equipment; the standard summer route may be buried or avalanche-prone.

  3. Myrtle Falls — Paradise; reach the viewpoint around 9:15 AM for the waterfall and Mount Rainier views, allowing ~30 minutes. Return via the safest signed route, roughly 1.5–2 miles and 1–1.5 hours.

  4. Reflection Lakes — Stevens Canyon Road area; drive from Paradise only if Stevens Canyon Road is open—otherwise skip this segment, as the road is commonly closed in April. If accessible, allow ~25 minutes’ driving each way plus ~30 minutes walking and viewing around the lakes.

  5. Snow Lake viewpoint and Bench Lake area — Paradise; from the Reflection Lakes area, return to Paradise and hike the snow-covered Bench/Snow Lake route only if ranger-approved, allowing ~3–4 hours round trip and approximately 4–5 miles. In April, this is a winter route rather than a reliably marked summer hike; check avalanche conditions and do not proceed without appropriate equipment and experience.

  6. Paradise Inn dining room or nearby food stop — Paradise; eat around 4:30–5:30 PM, budgeting approximately $20–35 per person, then walk ~5–10 minutes back to the parking area. Plan to leave before dark, allowing roughly 1.5–2 hours’ driving to the Nisqually Entrance and onward from the park.

Early Morning: Arrival and Trail Conditions

Arrive at the Paradise Inn parking area by 6:30 AM, entering through the Nisqually Entrance and parking near the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center or lodge if spaces and road access permit. The drive from the entrance to Paradise can take about 45–60 minutes, and you should allow another 20 minutes for restrooms, gear checks, and a final weather update. In late April, Paradise is still a winter environment: Paradise Road may open late, require tire chains, or be closed entirely, and the Stevens Canyon Road to Reflection Lakes is very commonly closed. Check Mount Rainier National Park road conditions and the avalanche forecast before leaving; if Paradise itself is inaccessible, do not attempt to force this itinerary.

Begin around 7:00 AM on the Skyline Trail, traveling clockwise and branching toward the Golden Gate Trail and Myrtle Falls. Expect roughly 2.5–3 miles and 2–2½ hours to reach the falls in spring snow, with route-finding taking longer than the summer signs suggest. Carry traction devices, poles, map/GPS, extra layers, and avalanche equipment if entering steep or potentially consequential terrain. Reach Myrtle Falls around 9:15 AM, allowing about 30 minutes for the viewpoint and photographs, then return by the safest signed or ranger-approved route—approximately 1.5–2 miles and 1–1½ hours. Do not descend onto snow-covered slopes merely to follow the summer trail line.

Midday: Reflection Lakes Contingency

After returning to the Paradise Inn parking area around 11:00 AM–noon, drive toward Reflection Lakes only if Stevens Canyon Road is officially open and conditions are suitable. The drive is roughly 25 minutes each way, but late-April access is unlikely, so confirm this before setting out; there is no useful workaround if the road is closed. If open, park at the signed Reflection Lakes pullout, walk and view the lakes for about 30 minutes, and allow extra time for snow-covered paths and icy parking areas. If the road is closed, keep this segment as a scenic stop from the accessible Paradise area rather than attempting to walk the road, which would add many miles and may expose you to avalanche hazards.

Return to Paradise for the Bench Lake and Snow Lake viewpoint route only after checking with a ranger and confirming that the route is safe. From the Paradise area, plan on approximately 4–5 miles round trip and 3–4 hours, but treat it as a winter backcountry outing: the summer trail may be buried, route markers can be invisible, and avalanche terrain may be present. Turn around if visibility, snow stability, navigation, or daylight deteriorates. This schedule places you back near the lodge around 4:00–4:30 PM; if rangers advise against the route, use the time for a shorter, low-angle snow walk around Paradise instead.

Evening: Food and Departure

Eat around 4:30–5:30 PM at the Paradise Inn dining room if it is open for the season, or use your packed food if the lodge’s seasonal services are unavailable; budget roughly $20–35 per person and verify hours before relying on it. From the lodge or visitor-center area, it is about a 5–10 minute walk back to the parking area. Aim to leave by 5:30 PM, before darkness and any evening weather shift. Allow roughly 1½–2 hours to drive from Paradise back through the Nisqually Entrance, with additional time for the onward journey; check your fuel level before entering the park, as services inside are limited.
