Parashar Lake and Rewalsar One-Day Bike Trip from Chandigarh

Day 1 · Fri, Aug 14
Rewalsar, Himachal Pradesh

Parashar Lake and Rewalsar circuit

  1. Chandigarh–Mandi–Baggi road route — Chandigarh to Baggi trailhead by motorcycle, via Kiratpur Sahib, Bilaspur, and Mandi; depart immediately around 7:30 AM, allowing ~6–7 hours with breaks. Park only at the designated Baggi village area and confirm road conditions before committing to the final mountain stretch.

  2. Parashar Lake — Baggi, Mandi district; hike from Baggi for ~2–3 hours each way to the sacred lake and pagoda-style temple, with ~1.5 hours at the viewpoint and lakeshore. This is the day’s marquee Himalayan experience; carry food and water, as facilities are limited.

  3. Baggi village lunch stop — Baggi, near the trailhead; have a simple locally prepared meal and tea after descending, allowing ~45 minutes. Budget approximately ₹150–300 per person.

  4. Rewalsar Lake — Rewalsar, Mandi district; explore the pilgrimage lake, monasteries, Hindu temples, and floating reed-covered waters for ~1 hour, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening.

  5. Local dhaba near Rewalsar — Rewalsar market; eat an early vegetarian dinner of Himachali or North Indian fare for ~45 minutes, budgeting approximately ₹200–400 per person. Keep the stop brief because the return ride is long.

  6. Rewalsar–Mandi–Chandigarh return route — Return by motorcycle via Mandi, Bilaspur, and Kiratpur Sahib, departing around 7:00 PM only if fully rested; allow ~5–6 hours and avoid riding the mountain sections when fatigued. Take regular fuel and rest stops, and return via the same route rather than attempting a late shortcut.

Early Morning: Chandigarh to Baggi

Leave Chandigarh immediately around 7:30 AM on the Chandigarh–Kiratpur Sahib–Bilaspur–Mandi–Baggi route. The ride to Baggi village takes roughly 6–7 hours with fuel, breakfast, and short rest stops; expect fast highway riding first, followed by slower, winding mountain roads after Mandi. Check rain and road conditions before committing to the final stretch, especially in August, and carry a puncture kit and rain layer. Park only in the designated village area near the Baggi trailhead, confirming with locals where motorcycles can be left safely.

From Baggi, the walk to Parashar Lake is approximately 2–3 hours each way, depending on the monsoon trail and your pace. Carry at least 1.5–2 litres of water, packed food, and grippy footwear—there are very limited facilities on the trail. Allow about 1.5 hours at the sacred lake, the pagoda-style Parashar Temple, and the viewpoint overlooking the unusual floating island. Avoid stepping into restricted or marshy areas around the lakeshore, and descend with enough daylight rather than lingering too late.

Late Afternoon: Baggi to Rewalsar

After returning to Baggi, take a simple locally prepared lunch and tea near the trailhead, budgeting ₹150–300 per person and allowing around 45 minutes. Ride onward toward Rewalsar Lake, generally via Mandi, allowing roughly 1.5–2 hours depending on weather and road conditions. At Rewalsar, spend about an hour walking around the pilgrimage lake, where reed-covered floating islands sit among Tibetan monasteries and Hindu temples. Keep the visit unhurried but brief; monsoon evenings become dark quickly, and the return ride is long.

Evening: Rewalsar to Chandigarh

Have an early vegetarian dinner at a local dhaba in the Rewalsar market, choosing simple Himachali or North Indian dishes for about ₹200–400 per person. Leave around 7:00 PM only if everyone is genuinely rested; otherwise, the safer choice is to stop overnight rather than ride tired mountain roads. Return via Mandi–Bilaspur–Kiratpur Sahib–Chandigarh, using the same route rather than attempting a late shortcut. Allow approximately 5–6 hours, refuel around Mandi or Bilaspur, and take regular breaks before the final highway leg into Chandigarh.
