One-Day Ogunquit and Kennebunkport Road Trip

Day 1 · Tue, Aug 18
Ogunquit, ME

Ogunquit and Kennebunkport coastal day

  1. Ogunquit Beach — Ogunquit Beach area; enjoy a relaxed start with wide sand, ocean views, and time for swimming or a shoreline walk (morning, ~1.5 hours).
  2. Marginal Way — Ogunquit village to Perkins Cove; walk this iconic rocky coastal path toward the harbor, allowing time for viewpoints and photos (late morning, ~1.5 hours).
  3. The Maine Catch — Ogunquit village; stop for fresh Maine seafood in a casual setting, with approximately $25–$45 per person for lunch (early afternoon, ~1 hour).
  4. Perkins Cove — Perkins Cove; browse the small shops and galleries, cross the historic footbridge, and enjoy the harbor atmosphere (afternoon, ~1 hour).
  5. Cape Porpoise Harbor — Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport; drive north for a quieter working-harbor experience and views toward Goat Island Light (late afternoon, ~45 minutes).
  6. Dock Square — Kennebunkport village; finish with a stroll among boutiques, galleries, and waterfront restaurants, or an optional dessert stop (early evening, ~1 hour).

Morning

Start at Ogunquit Beach around 8:00–8:30 a.m., before the main summer crowds arrive. The broad beach is ideal for a swim or an easy shoreline walk, and the morning light is usually beautiful on the water. Expect seasonal parking near the beach to be costly—often roughly $25–$40 for the day—and bring cash or a card for municipal lots. After about 90 minutes, walk or drive into the village for Marginal Way, the paved 1.25-mile coastal path from Ogunquit toward Perkins Cove. Allow another 90 minutes at an unhurried pace; there are benches and rocky overlooks, but very little shade, so sunscreen and water matter.

Lunch and Afternoon

Have lunch at The Maine Catch in Ogunquit around 12:30–1:00 p.m. Plan on approximately $25–$45 per person, and check same-day hours or expect a short wait in August. From the restaurant, continue to Perkins Cove, where you can browse small galleries and shops, cross the historic footbridge, and watch the boats come and go. It is only a short village-area drive, but walking is often easier than trying to move the car; use a paid lot and keep the receipt if re-entry is allowed. Give yourself roughly an hour here before driving north to Cape Porpoise Harbor in Kennebunkport—about 25–30 minutes via Route 1 and local roads. This is a quieter stop than the main village, with working lobster boats, a handful of waterfront views, and a clear look toward Goat Island Light; 45 minutes is enough for photos and a relaxed harbor pause.

Early Evening

Finish in Dock Square, the center of Kennebunkport, roughly a 10-minute drive from Cape Porpoise Harbor. Stroll among the boutiques, galleries, and waterfront restaurants, and leave room for an optional ice cream or dessert stop. Summer parking fills quickly, so use a municipal lot rather than circling the square, and expect many shops to close around 5–6 p.m. If you want dinner here instead of returning to Ogunquit, arrive before the evening rush or join a waitlist as soon as you park.
