Day 1 · Thu, Sep 10
Shanghai, China

  1. Yu Garden — Old City; explore classic Ming-style pavilions and tranquil rock gardens, afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant (Yu Garden branch) — Yu Garden area; try Shanghai’s famous xiaolongbao for lunch, late afternoon, ~1 hour; ¥50–100 per person.
  3. Shanghai Old Street — Old City; browse historic-style storefronts, tea shops, and local snacks, late afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  4. The Bund — Huangpu waterfront; admire Shanghai’s historic skyline and grand colonial-era buildings, early evening, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Huangpu River evening cruise — Bund/Pudong waterfront; see the illuminated skyline from the water, evening, ~1 hour; approximately ¥150–250 per person.

Afternoon

Begin at Yu Garden, arriving around 1:30–2:00 PM if possible. Set in the heart of the Old City, its zigzag bridges, moon gates, carved halls, and famous rockeries feel wonderfully removed from the surrounding bustle. Allow about 1½ hours, and take your time around the Huxinting Tea House and the shaded garden paths. Entry is usually around ¥30–40, though hours can vary; check the official ticketing page before setting out. From central Shanghai, Yuyuan Garden metro station on Lines 10 or 14 is the easiest arrival point, followed by a 10-minute walk through the busy bazaar streets.

For a late lunch, walk a few minutes to Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant (Yu Garden branch) and order xiaolongbao—carefully bite a small opening first, sip the hot soup, then eat the dumpling. Budget ¥50–100 per person and expect a queue at peak times; going after the main lunch rush makes the experience easier. Afterwards, spend roughly 45 minutes browsing Shanghai Old Street, where restored Qing- and Ming-style façades house tea shops, snack stalls, and small souvenir stores. It is touristy but atmospheric, especially as afternoon light begins to soften; keep some small cash or mobile payment ready for snacks and minor purchases.

Early Evening and Night

Walk or take a short taxi ride—roughly 10–15 minutes depending on traffic—to The Bund. Aim to arrive before sunset so you can see the historic banks and trading houses in daylight, then watch Pudong’s towers illuminate across the river. Stroll north or south along the promenade for about 1½ hours, but avoid standing only at the busiest central section near Chenyi Square; the views become more relaxed farther north toward Waibaidu Bridge. Finish with a one-hour Huangpu River evening cruise, generally ¥150–250 per person. Boats may depart from several Bund-area piers and schedules change seasonally, so reserve a departure in advance and arrive 20–30 minutes early for boarding and security. Bring a light layer—the river breeze is noticeable even in September—and expect the brightest skyline views after full dark.
