Half-day at Knysna Quays

  1. Knysna Waterfront — Knysna Quays; begin with a relaxed harbor stroll and browse the shops, ~45 minutes.
  2. Featherbed Company ferry cruise — Waterfront; take a scenic lagoon cruise toward the Knysna Heads, ~2 hours. Confirm departure times in advance.
  3. The Drydock Food Co. — Knysna Waterfront; enjoy seafood or South African fare overlooking the marina, ~1 hour; approximately R180–R350 per person excluding drinks.
  4. Knysna Quays sunset walk — Waterfront; finish along the pontoons and watch the light change over the lagoon, ~30–45 minutes.

Late Morning — Waterfront and Lagoon Cruise

Start at Knysna Waterfront around 10:30am with an easy 45-minute stroll along Knysna Quays. Browse the small boutiques, galleries and harbour-facing shops before the waterfront becomes busier. The quays are free to explore, with cafés and public parking nearby; allow a little extra time to find a space, particularly on Fridays and during school holidays. From here, walk directly to the Featherbed Company departure point for the scenic ferry cruise towards the Knysna Heads. The cruise takes roughly two hours and is the best way to appreciate how the lagoon opens towards the Indian Ocean—bring a light layer, as it can feel cooler and breezier on the water. Departure times vary seasonally, so confirm the sailing in advance and arrive 20–30 minutes early.

Lunch and Sunset

After returning to the quays, settle in at The Drydock Food Co. for lunch overlooking the marina. Seafood is the natural choice, though the South African dishes are worthwhile too; budget approximately R180–R350 per person excluding drinks, and allow about an hour. Afterwards, keep the afternoon unhurried with a final 30–45-minute sunset walk along the Knysna Quays pontoons. This is particularly lovely as the boats and lagoon catch the changing light; sunset in September is generally around 6:00pm, but check the exact time and aim to arrive 20 minutes beforehand. The waterfront is compact, so all stops are comfortably walkable—there is no need to move the car between activities.
