Start around 4:30–5:00 AM from Katra so you are on the track before the day warms up. Register for the yatra and collect the required access slip at the Yatra Registration Counter near the town’s main bus stand; registration is generally available from the early morning, but confirm the current system locally or online before setting out. Walk or take a battery-operated vehicle toward Banganga Temple, the traditional gateway to the climb. Allow 30–45 minutes here for darshan and a short rest, then continue along the well-lit, paved route toward Ardhkuwari Cave. The first stretch is busy with pilgrims, ponies, snack stalls, drinking-water points, and security checks, so keep valuables secure and carry only a small daypack.
Expect roughly 1–2 hours at Ardhkuwari Cave, depending on the queue; the narrow original cave may occasionally be closed or subject to controlled entry, with an alternative passage used when necessary. Continue uphill to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan, allowing about 6–10 hours for the full return journey from Katra, including queues and rest stops. Comfortable shoes, a light layer, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle are essential. Pony services and battery vehicles are available on parts of the route, but agree on the fare and destination before boarding; helicopter services, when operating, require advance booking and do not replace the final shrine visit. Food stalls operate along the track, though simple vegetarian meals and packaged snacks are the safest practical choices.
After returning to town, spend about an hour wandering Katra Main Bazaar, especially around the station and bus-stand area, where you will find prayer items, dry fruit, shawls, and small devotional souvenirs. Bargaining is reasonable in independent shops, but check packaging and prices before buying edible offerings. Finish with dinner at Prem Vaishno Dhaba, a straightforward vegetarian stop suited to pilgrims; expect approximately ₹200–₹400 per person for North Indian staples such as rajma, dal, roti, and rice. Aim to eat early, around 7:00–8:00 PM, and rest well—tomorrow’s drive to Shiv Khori is best started around 5:00 AM.
Leave Katra at about 5:00 AM in your pre-arranged car, following the road through Reasi and Pouni toward Ransoo. The drive usually takes 3–4 hours, so carry water, light snacks, and some cash for roadside stops; mobile coverage can be patchy. Ask your driver to confirm the designated parking or drop-off area in Ransoo before setting out, as the final approach can become busy with pilgrims.
After a quick tea or breakfast near the Ransoo approach, begin the roughly 3–4 km walk each way to Shiv Khori Cave Shrine. Allow 4–5 hours for the trek, queues, security checks, and darshan. The path includes stairs and uneven sections, so wear secure walking shoes and carry only a small bag; ponies and local assistance may be available, but confirm prices before using them. Keep your pace steady rather than rushing—the cave passage is narrow and can feel slippery, particularly after rain. September may still be warm, so an early arrival is valuable.
Back in Ransoo, spend about 45 minutes at the pilgrim refreshment stalls and market for a simple vegetarian meal—expect roughly ₹150–₹300 per person for thali, rajma-rice, paratha, tea, or bottled water. Avoid delaying too long if you hope to reach Katra before dark. Start the return via Pouni and pause for around 30 minutes at a safe countryside viewpoint along the road for rural valley scenery and refreshments; ask the driver to stop only where parking is safe. Leave Ransoo by 2:00–3:00 PM, allowing for roadworks, traffic, and a short rest stop, and expect to reach Katra in the early evening.
