Leave Manila before dawn in a pre-booked van or private vehicle, allowing roughly 9–11 hours to reach Babadak Ranger Station, including stops. The usual route heads north on NLEX and TPLEX toward Baguio, then continues through the highlands toward Bokod and the Ambangeg trailhead; the final mountain roads are winding, so confirm your driver is comfortable with the route and can take you all the way to Babadak. Build in time for traffic and weather rather than planning around the fastest estimate.
Pause at Cafe by the Ruins in Baguio City for a substantial early meal and a chance to stretch before the longer highland drive. Budget about ₱500–₱1,000 per person, depending on your order, and check its hours before setting out—an early start from Manila may put you there before opening. Keep the stop purposeful: there’s still a long, slow drive ahead, and it’s wise to pick up any last-minute snacks or water in Baguio.
Continue to DENR/CENRO Bokod for the required visitor registration and trail briefing, then onward to Babadak Ranger Station. Confirm current permits, office arrangements, and access requirements with the relevant authorities or your hike organizer in advance; don’t assume registration can be handled at the trailhead. At Babadak, check in to your booked bunk or campsite, organize warm layers and essentials for the pre-dawn start, and rest. Keep the evening quiet—tomorrow’s early hike is much easier if you arrive with your gear ready and get to bed promptly.
Set out from Babadak around midnight with your registered guide, following the gradual Ambangeg Trail at a steady beginner-friendly pace. Allow roughly 4–6 hours uphill, depending on conditions and your group’s pace; it’s dark, cold and often windy, so keep your headlamp on and stay close to your guide. Wear warm layers, gloves and a hat, and bring water and a small snack. The summit can feel bitterly cold before sunrise, so save a dry layer for the top.
At the Mount Pulag grassland summit, give yourselves 30–45 minutes to enjoy the sunrise and highland views, while keeping warm and packing out every bit of rubbish. Then descend by the same trail, allowing about 3–4 hours back to Babadak. Collect your belongings and check out before getting on the road; tired legs and loose gravel make trekking poles useful on the way down.
Stop for a simple, filling roadside lunch in the Bokod area before the long drive—budget around ₱200–₱500 per person, and don’t count on every eatery being open, so keep snacks handy. Leave as soon as you’ve checked out and continue via Baguio toward Manila; allow 9–11 hours or more by road, plus any traffic and rest stops. A brief stop in Baguio can break up the drive, but reaching Manila the same night will be tiring after the hike. Arrange a backup overnight stay in Baguio in advance in case the group is too exhausted or the road takes longer than expected.
