Leave Pune around 7:00–8:00 AM to allow roughly 3–4 hours by car, longer if traffic builds near Lonavala or Khopoli. Follow the Pune–Mumbai Expressway/old highway corridor, then take the road toward Karjat; check live navigation before setting off, since the best connection can vary with traffic. Confirm overnight parking with your accommodation and leave your bags there before heading out.
From Karjat, drive toward Kondana village—about 12 km from town—then allow around 1.5–2 hours for the walk and visit to Kondana Caves. The path can be muddy or slippery in early October, so wear shoes with grip and carry water; check locally about trail conditions before starting. Return to town with time to freshen up.
Spend about 45 minutes around Karjat market area picking up trek snacks, electrolyte sachets and water for tomorrow; don’t leave the taxi to the Diksal/Bhivpuri trailhead until morning without confirming the pickup plan with your stay. For dinner, ask your accommodation to point you to a current Maharashtrian thali place near the town centre, and budget about ₹300–700 per person. Keep the meal simple and turn in early—you’ll want a rested start for the trek.
Leave your Karjat stay before dawn and have your pre-arranged taxi drop you on the Diksal/Bhivpuri side; aim to be walking by about 6:00 AM. With a local guide, allow 5–7 hours for the strenuous climb via Garbett Plateau to Matheran. Carry at least 2 litres of water per person, a packed lunch, snacks and a rain layer, and wear shoes with good grip—the trail can stay slippery after the monsoon. Agree on the route and turnaround plan with your guide before setting off; the guide typically costs about ₹1,500–3,000 per group.
After reaching Matheran, check in, freshen up and take it easy before wandering through Matheran Bazaar for around 45 minutes. It’s a relaxed first look at the hill station, with small shops and snack stalls; carry cash, as card and mobile connectivity can be patchy. For an early dinner, try the restaurant at Hotel Panorama or ask your accommodation to recommend a nearby kitchen that’s serving—budget roughly ₹400–900 per person, and check dinner timings locally.
If the trek finishes early and you still have daylight and energy, walk to Porcupine Point (Sunset Point) for the valley views; allow 1–1.5 hours round trip from the bazaar area, and ask your host about the current path conditions before setting out. It’s not worth pushing for after dark: if the trek runs late or your legs are done, skip it, eat early and rest for tomorrow.
Have a simple breakfast near Matheran station and arrive at the platform around 45 minutes before departure; confirm the earliest operating train and ticket availability shortly beforehand, since services and schedules can change. The ride to Neral usually takes about 2–2.5 hours, with lovely views as the train winds down the hill. Keep your luggage manageable, and don’t plan a tight connection—the toy train can run late.
At Neral station, allow about 30 minutes to collect stored luggage and pick up a takeaway snack for the road. Keep your private car and driver ready to leave as soon as you’re sorted; aim to be on the road by 10:00–10:30 AM, rather than waiting until noon, if reaching Pune by 6 PM matters. If the train is cancelled or its timing makes that target unrealistic, the more flexible backup is to get to Dasturi Naka by foot or horse and continue to Neral by taxi.
From Neral, take the route toward Karjat and Khopoli, then follow your driver’s live navigation for the best approach to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Allow roughly 3.5–4.5 hours, with traffic capable of pushing the journey beyond that; leaving promptly gives you the best chance of making Pune by 6 PM.
