Start at Mercado Central de Alicante while the stalls are lively; on Saturdays it generally trades from around 7:00 until 14:30, so aim to arrive by 9:00. Pick up a light breakfast of fruit, pastries or a small bocadillo, and leave about 45 minutes to browse. From the market, walk roughly 15 minutes to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. Give yourself 1½–2 hours for the fortress and its broad views over the city and bay. Entry to the castle is free; the lift entrance is near Playa del Postiguet and usually has a small fee, so check its hours and availability on the day. If you walk up instead, allow extra time—the climb is steep.
Head back down into Barrio de Santa Cruz, taking an hour to wander its narrow, hilly lanes, flower-filled steps and colorful houses. Wear shoes with grip; the descent can be uneven. Continue toward the waterfront for lunch at Dársena, by the marina. It’s a good place for rice dishes and seafood, with a relaxed harbor setting; budget about €25–45 per person and consider booking, especially on a Saturday.
After lunch, stroll the Explanada de España, pausing to take in the palm-lined promenade and its distinctive wave-pattern mosaic. Continue to Playa del Postiguet for an easy late-afternoon walk along the shore, with the castle rising behind you. Allow about 45 minutes for the promenade and an hour at the beach; in October it’s lovely for a seaside wander, though the water may feel cool. The route from the marina is straightforward on foot, and you can finish near the beach as the light softens over the Mediterranean.
