Start at the Steel Visitor Center in Munson Valley for maps and a check on current road, trail, and weather conditions; give it 30–45 minutes. October access can change quickly with snow, and the visitor center’s seasonal hours may be limited or it may be closed, so check the National Park Service’s Crater Lake alerts before setting out. If it’s closed, use posted updates and confirm conditions with park staff where available. Then continue to Rim Village on the South Rim for the lake views and a wander around the historic lodge area. Allow 1–1½ hours, and bring warm layers—the rim can feel much colder and windier than the approach road.
Have a casual meal at Rim Village Café (roughly $15–30 per person; allow 45–60 minutes), but treat it as a seasonal option and check that it’s serving that day. After lunch, walk a short stretch of the rim trail at Discovery Point for close-up caldera views; budget about an hour and turn back if snow or ice makes the path slippery. Finish at Pinnacles Overlook on the East Rim only if the access road is open and conditions are reasonable: the drive adds time, so check the day’s road status before committing. If it’s accessible, allow around 45 minutes at the overlook, plus the drive; otherwise, enjoy the South Rim without trying to push through a closure. Check the forecast and sunset time before you go, and aim to be off exposed roads and trails before dark.
