Start with breakfast at Ozark Cafe in downtown Jasper—think pancakes, eggs, and the kind of hearty diner meal that’ll carry you through a hike. Budget about $10–20 per person; Tuesday hours are typically 6 a.m.–8 p.m., but check ahead in case of seasonal changes. Then drive south on Scenic Highway 7 to the Arkansas Grand Canyon overlook, about 15 minutes from town. It’s a quick roadside stop—allow around 20 minutes for the view and photos; there’s no admission fee, and the pull-off can be busy on clear mornings.
From the overlook, backtrack toward Jasper and continue west toward Ponca and the Lost Valley Trail; allow roughly 35–45 minutes’ driving, depending on your route and road conditions. Set aside 2–3 hours for the wooded, rocky trail to Eden Falls and the cave area. Bring water and sturdy shoes, and check trail conditions before setting out: wet rock can be slippery, and cave access may be restricted. Pack lunch or snacks, since food options are limited once you’re out on the trail.
After the hike, drive to the Ponca Low-Water Bridge for a relaxed 30–45-minute riverside stop. The bridge and Buffalo River scenery are lovely, but don’t cross or linger in the water if levels are high—conditions can change quickly. Continue north to Boxley Valley (about 10–15 minutes) and spend an hour following the scenic road, keeping an eye out for elk as late afternoon turns toward dusk. Late September is a good time to watch, but give wildlife plenty of space and stay safely pulled off the road rather than stopping in traffic. Check the forecast and sunset time that day, and bring a light layer for the drive back to Jasper.
