Leave Collectorate, Kottayam around 3:30 AM and take the southbound NH 66 route toward Varkala; allow 3–3.5 hours for roughly 130 km, with a little extra for roadworks or a tea stop. Start with a full tank, and check live traffic before setting off. Aim to reach the Varkala Cliff area around 7 AM, when it’s cooler and quieter. Spend about an hour enjoying the clifftop views and walking down toward Papanasam Beach; check the sea conditions and keep children close near the water. Parking is available around the cliff, but expect a short walk to the viewpoints.
Drive on to Ramees Restaurant in Kollam for lunch, allowing 45–60 minutes and roughly ₹200–₹500 per person. Since it’s Gandhi Jayanti, a public holiday, confirm the restaurant’s hours before you leave; holiday schedules can differ. From there, head to Ashtamudi Lake for a lakeside pause or a short boat ride—allow 1–1.5 hours, and check boat availability and fares locally. Continue to Munroe Island (about 40–50 minutes by car) for a locally arranged canoe trip through its canals and village scenery; set aside 1.5–2 hours and book ahead if possible. October can bring showers, so take rain protection and keep this stop flexible. To preserve time for the drive back, aim to finish the canoe trip and leave the island by about 2:30–3 PM.
From Munroe Island, return via Kollam and NH 66, allowing 3.5–4 hours in traffic. Leaving by around 2:30 PM gives you the best chance of getting back within 16 hours of your 3:30 AM start; don’t add a long stop on the way home. Expect a packed day, and treat boat timings and road conditions as the variables that may shorten your time at the lake or island.
