Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Leave Fairfield early—around 6 a.m. gives you a better chance of reaching the redwoods with daylight to explore. Take I-80 west, connect to CA-37 and US-101 north, then continue through Leggett toward the Avenue; allow roughly 5–6 hours of driving, plus stops, and check traffic and road conditions before setting out. On US-101, The Peg House in Leggett makes a handy casual lunch stop before you turn onto the Avenue. Budget about $15–30 per person, and check its hours before you go.
Continue to the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree in Myers Flat for the famous car-sized opening and a short wander around the grounds; plan on 30–45 minutes and confirm admission and hours locally, as they can change. Then head north to Founders Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The easy loop takes about an hour and passes towering old-growth trees, including the fallen Dyerville Giant. Wear shoes that can handle damp, uneven ground, and leave time for pullouts along the Avenue—this is a scenic road with places to stop, not a single park entrance.
Finish at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center in Weott, where you can ask about current trail and road conditions and get a little context on the forest. Allow 30–45 minutes; visitor-center hours vary by season, so check before relying on it being open. The day’s driving and stops make this a full outing, so consider staying nearby rather than beginning the long drive back to Fairfield after dark.
Spend about 1½–2 hours at Rockefeller Forest near Bull Creek Flats, taking an easy, hurried walk beneath the old-growth redwoods. The grove is generally free to visit; bring water and layers, and check trail and road conditions before setting out, as access and facilities can vary. Leave time afterward for the drive to Ferndale.
Give Ferndale Historic Main Street about 1–1½ hours to wander among the Victorian storefronts and browse the independent shops. Shop hours vary, so don’t count on every door being open later in the day. Then settle in at VI Restaurant inside the Victorian Inn for dinner; budget roughly $20–40 per person and check current hours or reserve ahead, especially if your timing is tight.
From Ferndale, head south on US-101 and connect to I-80 east toward Fairfield. Plan on roughly 5–6 hours of driving before breaks, with about $45–75 in fuel depending on your vehicle; traffic and road conditions can add time. Dinner plus the drive makes for a late arrival, so consider eating earlier, leaving Ferndale before dinner, or breaking up the trip if you’d rather not drive late.
