6-Day Vietnam Itinerary with Airport Transfer to Sapa, Hanoi and Ha Long Bay

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Sapa

Airport Transfer to Sapa and Arrival

  1. Airport-to-Sapa transfer (airport to Sapa) — Continue directly by road after landing, allowing time for immigration and baggage before the long drive; arrival day, ~5–6.5 hours on the road.
  2. Sapa accommodation (Sapa) — Check in, have a simple dinner nearby and rest after the journey; evening, ~1–2 hours.

Arrival and transfer

Yes—if your flight from Chennai arrives early enough, you can travel straight from the airport to Sapa rather than spending the night in Hanoi. Allow roughly 5–6.5 hours by road, plus the time needed to clear immigration, collect your bags and meet your driver. A pre-booked private car is the easiest option after an international flight; shared buses are usually cheaper, but check their departure point and schedule before booking, as some do not leave directly from the airport.

For a same-day transfer, aim to land by early afternoon at the latest and confirm that your driver will wait if your flight is delayed. If you arrive later, or the connection leaves too little time for airport formalities, stay overnight near the airport and continue to Sapa the next morning rather than attempting a tiring late drive.

Evening in Sapa

After check-in, keep the evening low-key: eat near your accommodation and get some rest. Budget around VND 80,000–200,000 per person for a straightforward dinner; prices vary by restaurant. Ask your accommodation to confirm tomorrow’s transport and the weather for your mountain outing, and keep a warm layer handy—Sapa can feel cool after the drive.

Day 2
Sapa

Fansipan Mountain and Glass Bridge

  1. Sun World Fansipan Legend (southwest of Sapa town) — Ride the cable car up Fansipan for mountain views and time at the summit complex — morning to early afternoon, ~4 hours.
  2. Rong May Glass Bridge (O Quy Ho Pass) — Walk the glass skywalk above the valley and take in the pass views — afternoon, ~2 hours plus transfers.
  3. Sapa town centre (Sapa) — Return for a relaxed dinner after the excursions — evening, ~1 hour.

Morning

Head to Sun World Fansipan Legend early; it’s a short taxi ride from central Sapa, and the cable-car ride and summit area usually take around four hours altogether. Check the cable car’s operating status and weather before setting out, since cloud or strong winds can affect visibility and service. Bring a warm layer—the summit can be much colder than town—and allow extra time if you plan to climb the summit steps.

Afternoon

After returning to Sapa, arrange a car or taxi to Rong May Glass Bridge at O Quy Ho Pass. The drive takes roughly 30–45 minutes each way, depending on road conditions; allow around two hours at the site, plus transfers. It makes for a full day with Fansipan, so confirm transport and the bridge’s current operating status before you leave. Bring shoes with a good grip, and don’t count on clear views if the pass is foggy.

Evening

Return to Sapa town centre for dinner and keep the evening unhurried. A casual local meal generally costs around VND 100,000–250,000 per person, depending on dishes and drinks. If the weather or cable-car schedule delays the morning, prioritize Fansipan and check whether there’s still enough daylight and time for the glass bridge excursion.

Day 3
Hanoi

Travel from Sapa to Hanoi

Getting there from Sapa
Direct sleeper bus with Sao Viet or Sapa Express (about 5.5–6.5 hours, roughly VND 300,000–600,000). Book via Vexere or 12Go; choose a morning departure and confirm the Hanoi drop-off point so you have time to check in before visiting West Lake.
  1. Hotel check-in and reset (Hanoi) — Settle in and leave room to recover after the transfer from Sapa; early afternoon, ~1 hour.
  2. Tran Quoc Pagoda (West Lake) — Visit Hanoi’s historic lakeside pagoda and its peaceful grounds; afternoon, ~45–60 minutes.
  3. West Lake (Tay Ho) — Take an easy waterside stroll before dinner, without attempting the full circuit; late afternoon, ~1 hour.
  4. Lakeside restaurant (Tay Ho) — Enjoy dinner with Vietnamese or international options near the water; evening, ~1–1.5 hours.

Arrival and check-in

Once you reach Hanoi, head to your hotel, drop your bags and take a breather before going out. Your arrival point and timing can vary, so keep the afternoon flexible; a taxi or ride-hailing car is convenient if you have luggage.

Afternoon by West Lake

When you’re ready, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda on the eastern shore of West Lake. Allow about 45–60 minutes, dress modestly, and keep voices low around worshippers. Entry is generally free, though you can leave a donation; check locally for current visiting arrangements.

Afterwards, take a gentle walk along the lake rather than trying to cover its entire perimeter. Give yourself time to pause for a drink or simply enjoy the change of pace after the journey.

Dinner

Stay in Tay Ho for dinner at a lakeside restaurant, where menus commonly include Vietnamese dishes alongside international choices. Allow roughly VND 150,000–350,000 per person, depending on what you order. A short ride back to your hotel is easy to arrange; keep the evening relaxed ahead of tomorrow’s Hanoi sightseeing.

Day 4
Hanoi

Hanoi Local Tour and Train Street

  1. Temple of Literature (Dong Da) — Explore Hanoi’s historic temple and Vietnam’s first national university — morning, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Hanoi Train Street (Old Quarter edge) — See the railway-side street from a café or permitted viewing spot, following current access rules — late morning, ~45–60 minutes.
  3. Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su (Old Quarter) — Stop for a bowl of Hanoi-style pho — lunch, ~1 hour.
  4. Hoa Lo Prison Relic (French Quarter) — Visit the exhibits on Hanoi’s colonial and wartime history — afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre (near Hoan Kiem Lake) — Catch a traditional water-puppet performance — evening, ~1 hour.

Morning

Start at Temple of Literature in Dong Da, a historic temple and Vietnam’s first national university. Allow about 1½ hours; check the day’s opening information before you go. From there, head toward Hanoi Train Street on the edge of the Old Quarter. Spend 45–60 minutes at a café or permitted viewing spot. Access rules can change, so follow local guidance and never stand on the tracks.

Lunch and afternoon

For lunch, Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su serves Hanoi-style pho; budget around VND 50,000–100,000 per person, and allow extra time if there’s a queue. Then take a taxi or walk toward the French Quarter for Hoa Lo Prison Relic. Set aside about 1½ hours and check its current hours before setting out; admission is typically around VND 30,000.

Evening

Head to Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre near Hoan Kiem Lake for a roughly one-hour show. Book ahead if possible, especially for an evening performance, and arrive 15–20 minutes early; tickets commonly range from VND 100,000–200,000 depending on seating. Afterward, enjoy an unhurried walk by the lake or dinner nearby.

Day 5
Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay Cruise

Getting there from Hanoi
Shared limousine van or shuttle bus via the Hanoi–Ha Long Expressway (about 2.5–3 hours, ~300,000–500,000 VND one way). Book through your cruise operator, 12Go, or Bookaway; morning departure is best. If you have an overnight cruise, check whether the transfer is already included.
  1. Ha Long International Cruise Port (Bai Chay) — Board a day cruise and settle in for the bay route — late morning, ~30 minutes.
  2. Ha Long Bay (Lan Ha or core bay route, depending on cruise) — Cruise among limestone karsts, with lunch on board and a planned kayak or cave stop — midday to late afternoon, ~5–6 hours.
  3. Hanoi (Old Quarter or hotel) — Return to the city after the cruise and have a late dinner near your accommodation — evening, allow ~3 hours for the return transfer.

Late morning: Board the cruise

Allow time for the journey from Hanoi before boarding at Ha Long International Cruise Port. Day cruises usually include lunch and one or two shore activities; check your operator’s exact route and boarding instructions in advance, as itineraries vary.

Midday to afternoon: Ha Long Bay

Spend the main part of the day cruising through Ha Long Bay, with time for the included meal and a stop for kayaking, a cave visit or a viewpoint, depending on the route. Bring sun protection, water and shoes suitable for steps or uneven paths. A day cruise with transfers from Hanoi commonly costs around VND 1,200,000–2,500,000 per person; confirm whether transport, entrance fees and activities are included.

Evening: Back to Hanoi

After disembarking, return to Hanoi with your cruise transfer; expect to reach the city in the evening, with traffic affecting the timing. Keep dinner flexible and budget roughly VND 100,000–250,000 per person for a casual meal. If you have an early departure tomorrow, ask to be dropped close to your hotel and keep the evening low-key.

Day 6
Hanoi

Departure from Hanoi

Getting there from Ha Long Bay
Return shared limousine van or shuttle bus via the Hanoi–Ha Long Expressway (about 2.5–3 hours, ~300,000–500,000 VND one way). Arrange pickup at the port or cruise drop-off point through your cruise operator, 12Go, or Bookaway; confirm the pickup time and location in advance.
  1. Hanoi hotel or cruise drop-off point (Hanoi) — Collect your luggage and leave a buffer after the return from Ha Long Bay before heading to the airport — allow time for arrival, a quick meal and packing.
  2. Noi Bai International Airport (Soc Son) — Check in for your flight to Chennai — leave central Hanoi about 4–5 hours before departure, allowing roughly 45–60 minutes for the airport drive and at least 3 hours for international check-in.

Return and departure

Keep this day light: after arriving back from Ha Long Bay, collect your bags and have a quick meal before setting off for Noi Bai International Airport. Don’t plan sightseeing or a sit-down lunch; the timing depends on when your cruise transfer reaches Hanoi, and traffic can slow the airport run.

From central Hanoi, a taxi or pre-booked car typically takes around 45–60 minutes to the airport, but allow longer if traffic is heavy. Aim to arrive at least 3 hours before an international flight, and confirm your terminal and check-in details with the airline.

Before you go

If you’re flying to Chennai today, check that your cruise’s scheduled return to Hanoi leaves enough time to reach the airport for your flight. Keep your passport and flight details accessible, and have a backup transfer plan in case the cruise shuttle is delayed.
