Indianapolis to Greers Ferry Drive: Major Towns Along the Route

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Indianapolis → Terre Haute → St. Louis → Memphis → Little Rock → Conway → Clinton → Greers Ferry

Major Towns on the Drive to Greers Ferry

  1. Terre Haute (western Indiana) — First major Indiana town on the usual I-70 route, handy for fuel or a quick break — roughly 1–1.5 hours from Indianapolis.
  2. St. Louis (Missouri) — The route crosses the metro area on I-70 and then turns south onto I-55; allow extra time for traffic — about 3–4 hours from Terre Haute.
  3. Memphis (Tennessee) — Follow I-55 south, crossing the Mississippi River before joining I-40 west — about 4–5 hours from St. Louis.
  4. Little Rock (Arkansas) — Continue west on I-40, then take I-430 and I-30 as directed toward Conway — about 2 hours from Memphis.
  5. Conway (central Arkansas) — Leave the interstate area and head north on US-65 toward Clinton — about 30–40 minutes from Little Rock.
  6. Clinton (Van Buren County) — A useful final town for a break before following local roads to Greers Ferry — about 45–60 minutes from Conway.
  7. Greers Ferry (Cleburne County) — Finish the drive, check in, and keep the evening easy after a full day on the road — about 30–40 minutes from Clinton.

The towns you’ll pass through

The straightforward major-town sequence is Indianapolis → Terre Haute → St. Louis → Memphis → Little Rock → Conway → Clinton → Greers Ferry. From Indianapolis, take I-70 west toward Terre Haute and St. Louis; in the St. Louis area, follow I-55 south toward Memphis, then I-40 west through Little Rock. The final approach generally uses I-430/I-30 to reach Conway, then US-65 north toward Clinton and local roads to Greers Ferry. Check your navigation on the day, as it may choose a different route around metro traffic or roadworks.

How to pace it

Expect roughly 9½–11 hours of driving in good conditions, before breaks; allow around 11–13 hours door to door with food, fuel, and rest stops. Leave early if possible, and don’t feel you need to stop in every town—the list shows the route, not required sightseeing stops. St. Louis, Memphis, and Little Rock can all add time in rush-hour traffic.

Plan a couple of proper breaks along the way, perhaps around Terre Haute and again near Memphis or Little Rock. Casual meals typically run about $12–25 per person. After reaching Greers Ferry, check in and have dinner nearby or in Heber Springs if you still have energy. If traffic pushes the drive well past 11 hours behind the wheel, consider an overnight stop rather than driving tired.
