3-Day Chikmagaluru Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Chikmagaluru

Explore Chikmagaluru

  1. Coffee Museum — outskirts of Chikmagaluru town; learn how coffee is grown and processed, allowing about 1–1.5 hours (check current visiting hours before setting out).
  2. Mahatma Gandhi Park — town; take a relaxed walk through the gardens, about 1 hour.
  3. Town Canteen — central Chikmagaluru; try local vegetarian snacks or a South Indian meal, about 45–60 minutes; approximately ₹150–₹350 per person.
  4. Hirekolale Lake — west of town; finish with a scenic lakeside break, about 1 hour, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes each way by car from central Chikmagaluru.

Morning

Start at the Coffee Museum on the outskirts of town; allow 1–1½ hours to see how coffee is grown and processed. Check its current visiting hours before setting out, as they can vary. A cab or auto from central Chikmagaluru is the easiest option; agree the fare or confirm the meter before you leave.

Late morning and lunch

Head back into town for an easy hour at Mahatma Gandhi Park, then continue to Town Canteen for a vegetarian South Indian meal or snacks. Allow 45–60 minutes and roughly ₹150–₹350 per person. The park is a relaxed place for a stroll rather than a major sightseeing stop, so take your time and keep some water handy.

Afternoon and evening

Hire a car or cab to Hirekolale Lake, around 20–30 minutes each way from central Chikmagaluru; local public transport is less convenient for this stop. Spend about an hour by the water, ideally arriving later in the afternoon for softer light. There are limited facilities around the lake, so bring water and snacks, and check local access conditions before you go. Allow roughly two hours for the round trip and visit, with a little extra time if you want to linger.

Day 2
Chikmagaluru

Discover the Chikmagaluru hills

  1. Mullayanagiri — north of town; head up early for the summit views and short walk, allowing 1.5–2 hours, plus drive time.
  2. Seethalayanagiri — on the hill route beyond Mullayanagiri; pause at the viewpoint and temple, about 30–45 minutes.
  3. Baba Budangiri — further along the hill road; explore the shrine and mountain scenery, about 1–1.5 hours.
  4. Manikyadhara Falls — near Baba Budangiri; visit the falls and allow time for the steps and return walk, about 1–1.5 hours.
  5. Java Rain Resorts — on the Mullayanagiri road; take a sit-down meal break at the resort restaurant, about 1–1.5 hours; approximately ₹500–₹1,000 per person. Check access and dining availability ahead, as this is a resort.

Early Morning

Leave Chikmagaluru around 5:30–6:00 a.m. for Mullayanagiri; the drive is roughly 20–25 km, but the final hill road is narrow and can slow down, especially on weekends. Aim to reach near sunrise for clearer views and a cooler, less crowded summit walk. Allow 1½–2 hours here, including the short climb. Check locally for current road access and any vehicle restrictions before setting out; a full-day cab is the easiest option, typically around ₹2,500–₹4,500 depending on the vehicle and season.

Morning in the Hills

Continue along the hill route to Seethalayanagiri, about 30–45 minutes for the viewpoint and temple, then drive onward to Baba Budangiri. Give yourself 1–1½ hours at the shrine and surrounding viewpoints; dress modestly, and expect queues or slower access on busy days. From there, make the short onward drive to Manikyadhara Falls. The steps and return walk take effort, so allow 1–1½ hours and wear shoes with good grip; water flow and access can vary with the season, and local entry or parking charges may apply.

Lunch and Return

After the falls, head back toward Java Rain Resorts on the Mullayanagiri road for a relaxed sit-down meal. Budget about 1–1½ hours and ₹500–₹1,000 per person; because it’s a resort rather than a town restaurant, call ahead to confirm outside dining access and availability. Roads between the hill stops are winding, so leave a generous buffer for the return to town, and carry water and some cash for small fees along the way.

Day 3
Chikmagaluru

Final day in Chikmagaluru

  1. Chennakeshava Temple — Belur, east of Chikmagaluru; admire the Hoysala carvings and allow 1.5–2 hours, including travel from town.
  2. Hoysaleswara Temple — Halebidu; see another remarkable Hoysala temple, about 1.5–2 hours; allow roughly 30–40 minutes to drive from Belur.
  3. Veeranarayana Temple — Belavadi; visit this quieter Hoysala temple, about 45–60 minutes, allowing around 30–40 minutes from Halebidu.
  4. Town Canteen — central Chikmagaluru, on the return to town; finish with a relaxed early dinner or snack, about 45–60 minutes; approximately ₹150–₹350 per person.

Morning

Set out from central Chikmagaluru around 7:30 a.m. by cab or your own car; Belur is roughly 25 km east, usually a 40–50-minute drive. Start at Chennakeshava Temple, allowing 1½–2 hours to take in the detailed Hoysala stonework. Temples generally open in the morning, but hours and access to inner areas can vary, so check locally before you leave. Dress modestly, expect to remove your shoes, and carry a little cash for offerings; admission is often free or nominal, but confirm on arrival.

Afternoon

Drive about 30–40 minutes to Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu and allow another 1½–2 hours. After lunch nearby, continue around 30–40 minutes to the quieter Veeranarayana Temple in Belavadi; 45–60 minutes is a comfortable visit. These are active religious sites as well as heritage monuments, so keep voices low and follow any local restrictions on photography or entry. The three visits make a full day, so take water and leave some slack for slower rural roads.

Evening

Return to Chikmagaluru—roughly an hour or a little more from Belavadi—for an easy early dinner or snack at Town Canteen. Allow 45–60 minutes; its popular dosas and coffee are a satisfying finish, and budget about ₹150–₹350 per person. It can get busy around meal times, so be prepared for a short wait; check current hours before setting out, as they may change.
