Bodh Gaya, Bihar Travel Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Bodh Gaya

Explore Bodh Gaya

  1. Mahabodhi Temple — Bodh Gaya’s sacred center; visit in the morning (~2 hours), allowing time for security and any entry procedures.
  2. Bodh Gaya Archaeological Museum — Near the temple complex, its sculptures and artifacts add context to the site; late morning (~1 hour; check locally for opening days and hours).
  3. Be Happy Cafe — Near the main temple area, a relaxed stop for lunch and a mix of Indian and international dishes (~1 hour; approximately ₹500–1,000 per person).
  4. Great Buddha Statue — A short walk from the central temple area, this striking statue is worth a quiet afternoon visit (~45 minutes).
  5. Thai Monastery — Nearby, admire its distinctive Thai-style architecture and peaceful grounds (~45 minutes; observe local access and worship etiquette).

Morning

Start early at Mahabodhi Temple, ideally around opening time, when the grounds are cooler and quieter. Allow about two hours for security checks and a calm circuit of the temple and Bodhi Tree; leave large bags behind and follow signs about footwear, photography and restricted areas. Entry is generally free, though rules can change. From there, walk to the nearby Bodh Gaya Archaeological Museum for an hour with its sculptures and finds. Check its opening days and hours locally before setting out, as these can vary; if it’s closed, use the time for a slower wander around the temple precinct.

Lunch and afternoon

Have lunch at Be Happy Cafe, near the main temple area. It serves Indian and international dishes; budget roughly ₹500–1,000 per person, and allow an hour to take a proper break. In the afternoon, walk to the Great Buddha Statue—about 15–20 minutes from the central temple area, depending on your route—and spend around 45 minutes there. Continue on foot to the Thai Monastery, also nearby, for its distinctive Thai-style architecture and peaceful grounds. Allow about 45 minutes, dress respectfully and keep voices low; access to some areas may be limited during prayer or ceremonies. Between stops, an auto-rickshaw is handy if the heat makes walking unappealing; agree on the fare before riding.
