Start in Bengaluru with a pre-booked flight to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport; the flight itself is around 1½ hours, but allow roughly 4–6 hours door to door for getting to the airport, check-in, queues, baggage and the onward drive. For eight people, arrange a suitable van or tempo traveller in advance, checking that it has room for everyone’s luggage. The drive from the airport to Varkala is about 40 km and usually takes 1–1½ hours, depending on traffic. Flight times and availability need checking, so don’t count on fitting in the temple visit unless you arrive with plenty of daylight.
If timing and temple access allow, spend about an hour at Janardanaswamy Temple, close to Papanasam Beach. Dress modestly and check entry requirements locally; visitors’ access can vary, and temple worshippers may have priority. Then head down to Papanasam Beach for an easy 1–1½-hour walk along the shore. Keep an eye on the sea and follow local advice about swimming. Continue to Cafe Sarwaa on Varkala Cliff for a relaxed meal with coastal views; allow 1–1½ hours and budget around ₹500–₹1,000 per person. A cab or auto between the temple/beach area and the cliff is usually a short ride, though walking the steep paths can take longer.
Leave time to wander the path along Varkala Cliff and browse its shops before sunset; in late November, sunset is around 6 pm, but arrive early to find a comfortable spot. Plan to stay overnight in Varkala: after the outbound journey and these visits, returning to Bengaluru the same day isn’t realistic. Travel back the following day by pre-booked transfer to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, then fly to Bengaluru; allow most of the day door to door, including airport arrival time, baggage and the transfer on the Bengaluru end.
