Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Allow roughly 20–30+ hours door to door from Surat to Hiroshima, including getting to the airport, check-in, international connections and the final transfer into town. The exact route and total time depend on the flights available, so don’t plan a fixed sightseeing start time around your arrival. After landing, follow airport signs for the airport limousine bus or rail connections into central Hiroshima; leave extra time for immigration, baggage and the transfer, and keep your first afternoon flexible.
If you’re rested and have enough daylight, head to Shukkei-en for an easy first stroll among its ponds, bridges and carefully landscaped paths. It’s near Hiroshima Station and is generally open from 9 a.m.; closing time varies by season, so check before setting out. Admission is about ¥260, and an hour is plenty for a gentle introduction to the city. If your flight runs late or you’re tired, skip the garden today rather than rushing it.
After the garden, return to Hiroshima Station to get oriented, pick up any essentials and check tomorrow’s train and ferry plan; allow 30–45 minutes. Then go to Okonomimura in Shintenchi for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki cooked at the counter. Budget around ¥1,500–3,000 per person and allow 1–1.5 hours. The food floors have multiple counters, so choose one that looks welcoming, and keep the evening relaxed—you’ll want an early start for Okunoshima tomorrow.
Leave Hiroshima early: allow about 3 hours door to door to reach Okunoshima, and check the day’s JR connections and the Tadanoumi–Okunoshima ferry timetable before you set out. The ferry is the key constraint—note the last return sailing and work backward from it. Buy your ticket at Tadanoumi Port; schedules and fares can change.
Once ashore, visit the Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum near the port first (roughly 45–60 minutes; admission is inexpensive, around ¥150). It gives important context for the island’s wartime history. Check its current opening hours before travelling, and bring water and a snack: services on the island are limited.
Follow the island’s walking and cycling paths for coastal views and rabbit-spotting, allowing 1.5–2.5 hours at an easy pace. Keep the rabbits’ welfare in mind: don’t feed them unsuitable food, and avoid chasing or picking them up. Continue east toward Okunoshima Lighthouse; allow 45–60 minutes for the walk and stop, and be prepared for uneven or exposed paths. In spring and autumn, the milder weather is especially pleasant for exploring, though wind or rain can make the coast feel cooler.
Before your return ferry, try Kyukamura Ohkunoshima near the port. Budget about ¥1,500–3,500 for a meal, but confirm day-visitor dining hours and availability in advance—don’t assume dinner will be served before your sailing. Keep enough time to walk back to the port, and leave the island on a ferry that gives you a comfortable buffer for the train connections back to Hiroshima.
Allow roughly three hours to get back to central Hiroshima, then head to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park for a quiet walk among its riverside memorials and open grounds (about 1–1.5 hours; the grounds are generally accessible at any time). From there, visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum inside the park and set aside 1.5–2 hours. Check its current hours, admission price and entry arrangements before you go; museum hours and ticketing can change.
Walk to Nagataya, close to the park, for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Budget about ¥1,500–3,000 per person and allow 1–1.5 hours; check the restaurant’s opening hours on the day, as service may pause between lunch and dinner. If your return flight is that day, keep an eye on the clock—this is a full morning and lunch rather than a quick airport stop.
For Hiroshima Airport, allow about an hour from central Hiroshima by road, then add your airline’s recommended check-in and security buffer, plus the full international journey and any connection time. This plan only works comfortably if your booked departure is late enough to leave after lunch; with an earlier flight, shorten the visits or, better, add a night in Hiroshima and travel to the airport the next day. Confirm your departure airport and flight details before setting out.
