Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Leave Jalandhar around 8am and follow NH44 north via Pathankot, Jammu, and the Banihal tunnel toward Srinagar. Allow roughly 9–12 hours door to door, including meal and rest stops; traffic, roadworks, or weather in the mountain sections can stretch that. This is a long drive, so take proper breaks and check road conditions before setting out. With an 8am departure, expect to reach Srinagar late and arrange your accommodation, parking, and check-in in advance.
Check in near Dal Lake or Lal Chowk and rest after the journey. If you arrive with daylight to spare and conditions are suitable, head to the Dal Lake waterfront for a short shikara ride; agree the price and duration with the boatman before boarding, and don’t count on a ride if you arrive after dark or weather disrupts service. Keep this optional rather than rushing straight back onto the road.
For your first meal, go to Mughal Darbar in Srinagar for Kashmiri wazwan and other regional dishes; budget about ₹500–₹1,200 per person. Opening hours can vary by branch and day, so check that it’s serving when you arrive or ask your hotel to call ahead.
Set off from Srinagar early with a pre-arranged taxi; the drive via Tangmarg usually takes 2–3 hours, but allow extra time for traffic and road conditions. In winter, check the road situation with your driver before leaving and ask whether snow chains or a local transfer will be needed. Keep the day flexible: the return drive takes about the same time, so a late start can make the afternoon feel rushed.
Make the Gulmarg Gondola your first stop. Check the current operating status and book the required ticket in advance—availability and operating schedules can change, and a ticket does not guarantee that weather won’t disrupt service. Afterward, visit St. Mary’s Church if it is accessible; conditions around the meadow can affect access, especially in winter. Continue with a relaxed walk around Gulmarg Golf Course, taking care on uneven or snowy ground. The course is best enjoyed for its open mountain views rather than as a quick photo stop.
Have lunch near the gondola area at a local café or restaurant; budget roughly ₹400–₹900 per person, and check what is open when you arrive, as choices can be limited outside peak season. Allow time for the return taxi to Srinagar, and agree on your pickup point and return fare with the driver before setting out.
Allow 5–6 hours for the private taxi from Gulmarg to Pahalgam, via Srinagar and Anantnag. Leave early and confirm the fare, road conditions, and where the driver can take you: access rules for Aru Valley and Betaab Valley can mean arranging local transport or changing vehicles. With this transfer, there won’t be enough daylight for a relaxed visit to both valleys, a riverside walk, and a return to Srinagar today.
After reaching Pahalgam, prioritize Aru Valley or Betaab Valley rather than trying to squeeze in both; check current access and local vehicle arrangements with your driver before setting off. Roads and transfers take time, so keep a generous buffer and don’t count on fixed sightseeing times. If visiting both valleys and the Lidder River is essential, add a night in Pahalgam and spread them across two days.
Have dinner at Dana Pani, a local option where you can budget roughly ₹400–₹900 per person, then stay overnight in Pahalgam. The proposed alternative—driving from Srinagar to Pahalgam and back the same day while visiting both valleys—would mean several hours on the road before any sightseeing, so it isn’t a sensible plan. Returning to Srinagar tonight after the transfer from Gulmarg would also make for an exceptionally long day; adjust the following day’s onward travel rather than attempting both drives.
Leave Pahalgam at first light in your pre-arranged taxi; allow 2.5–3.5 hours to reach Srinagar. This is already a demanding start, so keep the stop in Srinagar brief: have an early breakfast near your accommodation, pack the night before, and use the washroom and fuel stop before setting off again.
If you are on schedule, take a short walk along the Dal Lake promenade—only a quick stretch, not a sightseeing detour. Then begin the return drive via NH44, allowing roughly 9–12 hours door to door to Jalandhar, and longer if traffic, road conditions, or breaks slow you down. The promenade should be skipped if it risks delaying your departure.
Plan proper meal and rest breaks at highway stops along NH44, and have your driver check current traffic and road conditions before leaving. Combining the Pahalgam–Srinagar transfer with the long drive to Jalandhar makes this an exceptionally long day; the safer choice is to add a night in Srinagar and make the return drive the following morning. Don’t plan an evening activity on arrival.
