Four-Day Kochi, Munnar, Periyar and Alleppey Road Trip

Day 1 · Fri, Nov 13
Kochi

Arrive in Kochi

  1. Pune to Kochi — Fly from Pune to Kochi; allow roughly 5–7 hours door to door for airport transfers, check-in, flight time and baggage, depending on the flight available. Collect your pre-booked self-drive car at Kochi airport and allow extra time for rental paperwork and traffic.
  2. Fort Kochi Beach — Fort Kochi; take an easy waterfront walk after arrival, allowing about 45 minutes.
  3. Kashi Art Café — Fort Kochi; settle in over a relaxed meal in a leafy courtyard, about 1 hour; budget roughly ₹500–₹900 per person.
  4. Princess Street — Fort Kochi; browse the historic lanes at an unhurried pace, about 45 minutes, if you arrive with daylight and energy.

Travel to Kochi

Fly from Pune to Cochin International Airport; the actual door-to-door journey typically takes about 5–7 hours, depending on the flight and airport waits. Choose a flight that leaves enough daylight for the Fort Kochi stroll, and allow extra time after landing for baggage and your pre-booked self-drive car paperwork. From the airport, Fort Kochi is roughly 35 km away; expect around 1–1.5 hours by car, longer in traffic. Parking in the old quarter can be tight, so ask your accommodation about a space and leave the car there if possible.

Afternoon and Evening

Start gently with a 45-minute waterfront walk at Fort Kochi Beach. The sea wall and Chinese fishing nets make a good first introduction to the neighbourhood; late afternoon is more comfortable than the midday heat. Then settle into Kashi Art Café for a relaxed meal in its leafy courtyard—allow about an hour and budget roughly ₹500–₹900 per person. Check its current hours before setting out, as they can change.

If daylight and energy hold, spend about 45 minutes browsing Princess Street and its nearby lanes, where old colonial-era buildings now house cafés, galleries and small shops. The streets are best explored on foot; keep the car parked and wander without a fixed route. If your flight or airport-car pickup runs late, shorten the walk rather than rushing the evening.

Day 2 · Sat, Nov 14
Munnar

Munnar Hill Country

Getting there from Kochi
Private car with driver via the Kochi–Munnar highway (about 4–5 hours; roughly ₹4,000–₹6,000 per car). Leave in the morning to allow for slower, winding hill roads. Book through Savaari, MakeMyTrip, or your hotel.
  1. Kannan Devan Tea Museum (Nallathanni Estate) — Learn how tea is made and see historic equipment, if you arrive with enough time; afternoon, ~1 hour.
  2. Pothamedu Viewpoint (near Munnar) — Take in the tea-covered hills and mountain scenery; late afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  3. Munnar town (town centre) — Settle in over an early dinner and take a short stroll; evening, ~1–1.5 hours.

Afternoon

Keep the first part of the day for your travel from Kochi and check-in; the drive is several hours, and traffic or a meal stop can push your arrival later. If you reach Munnar by mid-afternoon, visit Kannan Devan Tea Museum; check its current opening hours before setting out, since the visit only works if you arrive before closing. Admission is usually a modest fee, but confirm locally.

Late afternoon and evening

If daylight and energy allow, continue to Pothamedu Viewpoint for a brief look across the tea plantations. It’s a short drive from town, but allow extra time on the winding roads, and don’t count on clear views if clouds roll in. Otherwise, skip the viewpoint rather than rushing.

Have dinner in Munnar town; a simple meal is often around ₹200–₹500 per person, while a sit-down restaurant may cost more. Keep the evening restful: tomorrow’s drive to Periyar is also a substantial hill-road journey.

Day 3 · Sun, Nov 15
Thekkady (Periyar)

Periyar Wildlife and Nature

Getting there from Munnar
Private car with driver via Poopara and Kumily (about 3.5–4.5 hours; roughly ₹4,000–₹6,000 per car). A morning departure is sensible; the final section is hilly. Arrange through your hotel or a local taxi operator.
  1. Periyar Tiger Reserve boat safari (Thekkady) — Look for wildlife and enjoy the forested lake; afternoon, ~1.5 hours, only if a suitable boat slot is prebooked and your arrival allows.
  2. Kumily spice garden (Kumily) — Take a short guided introduction to the spices grown in the region; late afternoon, ~1 hour.
  3. Kumily town (Kumily) — Unwind over a relaxed dinner after the drive and reserve activities; evening, ~1–1.5 hours.

Arrival and lunch

Your drive in from Munnar is handled separately; allow time after arrival to check in, have lunch and reach the reserve. The afternoon is intentionally light, since the winding hill roads and check-in can make arrival timing variable. For lunch, choose a nearby local restaurant in Thekkady or Kumily; expect roughly ₹200–₹500 per person for a simple meal.

Afternoon

If you arrive with enough time, take the Periyar Tiger Reserve boat safari, but book through the reserve’s official channels in advance and check the available slot and reporting time before setting out. Boat seats are limited, and the ride itself is about 1½ hours, with extra time needed to reach the boarding point and complete entry formalities. If the timing doesn’t work after the Munnar drive, don’t try to squeeze it in—enjoy a slower afternoon instead.

A guided visit to a Kumily spice garden is an easier alternative or add-on if time permits. Confirm locally that tours are running and how long the visit takes; a short tour is usually enough to get a feel for the area’s cardamom, pepper and other spices.

Evening

Keep dinner close to your accommodation in Kumily, where there are casual restaurants serving Kerala meals and regional dishes. Budget roughly ₹300–₹700 per person, depending on what you order. Settle in early if you can: tomorrow’s onward drive to Alleppey is a substantial road journey.

Day 4 · Mon, Nov 16
Alleppey and Kochi

Alleppey Backwaters and Return

Getting there from Thekkady (Periyar)
Private car with driver via Kottayam to Alleppey, then continue to Kochi (about 6–7 hours total, excluding any stop; roughly ₹7,000–₹10,000 per car). Start in the morning and confirm the driver is booked for the full route. Book through Savaari, MakeMyTrip, or a local taxi operator.
  1. Alleppey backwaters (Alappuzha) — Take a short cruise through the canals and lakes for a close-up of village life and paddy fields; late morning to early afternoon, ~2–3 hours.
  2. Alappuzha town (near the canals) — Stop for a relaxed lunch before the drive onward; early afternoon, ~45–60 minutes.
  3. Cochin International Airport (Nedumbassery) — Return the rental car and check in for your flight to Pune; allow ~1.5–2 hours for the drive, plus airport and car-return time.

Morning

Leave enough time for the drive from Thekkady to Alappuzha, then head straight for a backwater cruise. The drive commonly takes around 4–5 hours, but allow extra for traffic and a brief stop; that makes an early start important. A short cruise of about 2–3 hours is a more realistic fit than a full-day excursion. Ask locally about the day’s departure options and book ahead if you have a particular boat or time in mind.

Early afternoon

Have lunch in Alappuzha town—allow roughly ₹200–500 per person for a casual meal—then set off for the airport. The drive to Cochin International Airport is usually around 1.5–2 hours, before allowing time for fuel, rental-car inspection and drop-off, and airline check-in.

This is a tight final day: a flight to Pune only works comfortably if it leaves late enough to accommodate the Thekkady–Alappuzha drive, cruise, lunch and airport buffer. If your flight is earlier, skip the cruise or add a night; don’t count on fitting in a full backwater day before flying.
