Start around 8:00 at Hakodate Morning Market, beside Hakodate Station, while the seafood stalls are lively and breakfast queues are manageable. Allow about 1½ hours to browse and order a kaisendon; expect roughly ¥1,500–3,000 per person. Stall hours vary, and some close by early afternoon, so don’t leave the market visit late. Then take a Hakodate tram toward Goryokaku and walk the last stretch to Goryokaku Park—budget about 25–35 minutes door to door. Give the moat and star-shaped grounds around 1½ hours; the park grounds are generally open all day and free to enter.
For lunch, head to Lucky Pierrot Goryokaku Koen-mae, a local favorite with a playful, distinctly Hakodate feel; allow an hour and about ¥800–1,500 per person. From there, take a tram or taxi back toward the bay area (roughly 25–35 minutes) and spend about 1½ hours browsing Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. Shops typically keep daytime-to-evening hours, but individual closing times vary. Continue uphill into Motomachi for about 1½ hours among its historic streets, churches, and former consulates; wear comfortable shoes, as the slopes and steps add up.
Finish at Mount Hakodate Ropeway, close to Motomachi. Check the ropeway’s current operating hours, service conditions, and sunset time before you set out; in mid-October, sunset is around 5 p.m., and queues can build around dusk. Allow 1½ hours including the ride and waiting, and have a backup plan if wind or weather suspends service. This is a full day with several cross-town hops, so keep your Motomachi wandering focused if you want time at the summit before the light fades.
