Five-Day Rajasthan Honeymoon Route with Wildlife and Desert Safaris

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Jaipur, Rajasthan

Arrive in Jaipur

  1. Chennai to Jaipur — Fly from Chennai to Jaipur; allow roughly 5–7 hours door to door, including airport arrival, flight time, baggage and transfer to your hotel. Choose a flight that leaves time to settle in; flight availability and duration depend on the schedule.
  2. Hawa Mahal — Pink City; admire the honeycomb façade from outside and explore the nearby lanes, allowing about 45 minutes.
  3. City Palace, Jaipur — Pink City; visit the royal courtyards and museums, allowing 1.5–2 hours, with entry dependent on current access and ticketing.
  4. Jantar Mantar, Jaipur — Pink City; explore the remarkable historic astronomical instruments, allowing about an hour.
  5. Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar (LMB) — Johari Bazaar; enjoy a first taste of Rajasthani thali or sweets, around ₹300–700 per person, then take an easy evening stroll through the bazaar.

Journey from Chennai

Take an early flight from Chennai to Jaipur so there’s a realistic chance of seeing the sights before closing. Allow roughly 5–7 hours door to door for airport arrival, the flight, baggage and the ride from Jaipur Airport to your hotel; the flight schedule and duration vary, so check the actual itinerary before planning your sightseeing. A prebooked cab or app taxi is easiest with luggage, and the airport-to-city drive is often around 30–45 minutes, longer in traffic. If your flight lands in the afternoon or is delayed, the full sightseeing list may not fit: City Palace and Jantar Mantar have limited daytime entry, so check current hours and ticket availability rather than counting on late admission.

Pink City sights

Start at Hawa Mahal for the honeycomb façade—about 45 minutes is enough to admire it from outside and wander the nearby lanes. Then continue on foot to City Palace, allowing 1.5–2 hours for its courtyards and museums; access and ticket prices depend on current arrangements, so check before you go. Jantar Mantar is close by and merits about an hour among its remarkable historic astronomical instruments. These central sights are near one another, but allow extra time for traffic, queues and walking between entrances.

Evening in Johari Bazaar

Finish at Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar (LMB) in Johari Bazaar for a Rajasthani thali or a first round of Jaipur sweets; budget about ₹300–700 per person. Afterward, take an unhurried stroll through the bazaar, keeping an eye on closing times and your route back to the hotel. If the day has run late, enjoy the outside view of Hawa Mahal and the market atmosphere, and don’t rush the remaining timed-entry sights.

Day 2
Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan

Wildlife safari in Ranthambore

Getting there from Jaipur, Rajasthan
Train from Jaipur Junction to Sawai Madhopur (about 2–3 hours; roughly ₹150–₹700 depending on class). Book on IRCTC or MakeMyTrip. Take an early train and allow extra time for the station-to-lodge transfer before your afternoon safari.
Prebooked car via NH52 (about 4–5 hours; roughly ₹5,000–₹8,000). Book through your hotel or a car service; depart early for a more flexible arrival.
  1. Jaipur to Ranthambore National Park — Travel to Sawai Madhopur by car or train; allow about 4–5 hours door to door by road, or more with train schedules and station transfers. Start early and arrange a prebooked afternoon safari; park entry and safari vehicles require advance booking.
  2. Ranthambore Fort — Inside the national park; explore this hilltop UNESCO-listed fort if your arrival and park access allow, allowing 1.5–2 hours. Otherwise, save your energy for the safari.
  3. Ranthambore National Park safari — Sawai Madhopur; take a prebooked afternoon gypsy or canter safari for a chance to see tigers and other wildlife; sightings are never guaranteed.
  4. The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort — Near the park; consider a relaxed dinner at your stay, with meal costs varying by package and property. Confirm restaurant access if you are not staying there.

Morning

Take the prebooked train to Sawai Madhopur and allow time for the station-to-lodge transfer and check-in. The afternoon safari is the fixed point of the day, so head straight to your stay rather than trying to squeeze in extra sightseeing. If your train arrives early enough and your lodge can arrange the transfer, visit Ranthambore Fort before the safari; allow 1.5–2 hours for the uphill walk and steps, and check the day’s access arrangements locally. If timing is tight, save your energy for the park.

Afternoon

Set off for your prebooked afternoon safari in Ranthambore National Park. Choose a gypsy for a smaller group or a canter for a larger one; permits, vehicle and guide need to be booked ahead, and the total cost varies by vehicle, zone and season. December mornings and evenings can be chilly, so bring warm layers. Keep expectations open: tigers are a thrilling possibility, never a guarantee, and the forest is rewarding even for its birds, deer and landscape.

Evening

After the safari, return to your lodge to warm up and unwind. For a honeymoon splurge, consider dinner at The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort; contact the resort in advance to confirm restaurant access if you aren’t staying there, and check meal prices when booking. Otherwise, dinner at your own lodge is the simplest option after a long day outdoors.

Day 3
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Journey to the Thar Desert

Getting there from Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan
Prebooked private car (roughly 10–12 hours including breaks; about ₹12,000–₹18,000). Arrange through your hotel or a car service and leave very early; this is a long transfer, so expect little time for sightseeing on arrival.
Train via Jaipur (typically 15–20+ hours, depending on connections; roughly ₹500–₹2,000 in sleeper or AC classes). Check schedules and book on IRCTC; connections may make this a poor fit for a same-day arrival.
  1. Sawai Madhopur to Jaisalmer — This is the route’s most difficult transfer: allow roughly 12–15 hours door to door by road, including breaks, or longer by rail depending on connections. Leave very early; confirm transport before booking the trip, and expect little time for sightseeing on arrival.
  2. Jaisalmer Fort — Inside the old city; if you arrive with daylight and energy, take a brief first look at the living fort and its lanes, allowing about an hour.
  3. Gadisar Lake — Southeast edge of the old city; enjoy a gentle sunset-side walk if your arrival timing permits, allowing 45–60 minutes.
  4. Trio — Near the fort; have dinner with traditional Rajasthani dishes and fort views, approximately ₹500–1,000 per person.

Transfer and arrival

This is the toughest travel day of the route, so keep the schedule flexible: allow 12–15 hours door to door from Sawai Madhopur to Jaisalmer, including breaks and your arrival transfer. Confirm a private car and pickup details with your hotel or a reputable car service in advance; expect to reach town tired, with sightseeing possible only if the timing and your energy cooperate.

Late afternoon and evening

If you arrive with daylight left, spend about an hour wandering Jaisalmer Fort and its narrow lanes. It’s a living fort, so take care around residents’ homes and shops, and don’t try to cover every corner today. Then, if sunset timing works, head to Gadisar Lake for an easy 45–60-minute stroll among the ghats and pavilions; a short auto-rickshaw ride from the fort area is usually the simplest way to get there. If you arrive after dark or need a rest, skip the walk rather than rushing.

Dinner

Finish at Trio, near the fort, for traditional Rajasthani dishes and views back toward the old city. Budget roughly ₹500–₹1,000 per person; ask your hotel to call ahead, especially in busy December evenings.

Day 4
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Jaisalmer desert safari

  1. Patwon Ki Haveli — Old city; explore the ornate merchant havelis and carved sandstone details, allowing 1–1.5 hours.
  2. Nathmal Ki Haveli — Old city; admire the distinctive exterior and craftsmanship, allowing about 30–45 minutes.
  3. Kothari’s Patwa Haveli Museum — Old city; see furnished historic rooms and local artifacts, allowing about an hour.
  4. Bada Bagh — North of town; visit the royal cenotaphs in the late afternoon for desert light and a quieter, romantic pause, allowing about an hour.
  5. Sam Sand Dunes — West of Jaisalmer; take a prearranged camel or jeep desert safari around sunset, followed by a cultural evening at your booked camp. Allow several hours including the drive; confirm what dinner and performances are included.

Morning: Jaisalmer’s havelis

Start around 8:30–9:00 am, while the old lanes are cooler and less crowded. Explore Patwon Ki Haveli first (allow 1–1½ hours), then walk or take a short auto-rickshaw ride through the old city to Nathmal Ki Haveli for its striking carved façade (30–45 minutes). Continue to Kothari’s Patwa Haveli Museum for about an hour; it’s a separate museum visit, so check the day’s opening hours locally and carry cash for entry fees. As a rough guide, allow around ₹100–₹300 per person at each site, with charges subject to change.

Afternoon: Bada Bagh

Have lunch in town, then take a prebooked taxi to Bada Bagh, about 6 km north of the centre. The royal cenotaphs are best in the softer late-afternoon light; allow roughly an hour, and budget around ₹100–₹200 per person for entry. Keep an eye on the time: Sam Sand Dunes are roughly 40–45 km west of town, and the drive usually takes about an hour, so leave Bada Bagh with enough daylight to reach your booked safari.

Evening: Sunset at Sam Sand Dunes

Book a camel ride or jeep safari in advance through your desert camp, and confirm the pickup point, sunset timing, and whether transfers are included. A camel ride is the slower, more atmospheric choice; a jeep is better if you’d like a livelier ride. Safari-and-camp packages vary widely, so check exactly what the price covers before paying. After sunset, stay for the cultural evening at your booked camp and confirm whether dinner and performances are included; bring a warm layer, as desert nights in December can be cold.

Day 5
Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Return from Jaisalmer

  1. Jaisalmer Folklore Museum — Near Gadisar Lake; a compact look at regional folk art and culture, allowing about an hour, if your departure schedule permits.
  2. Kuku Coffee Shop — Fort area; have coffee and a light breakfast with views over the old city, around ₹200–500 per person.
  3. Jaisalmer to Chennai — The return requires a confirmed flight itinerary; schedules and connections vary, so do not assume a direct flight. Allow about 5–7 hours door to door for a flight itinerary, plus extra time if traveling via another airport; if using Jodhpur Airport, the road transfer from Jaisalmer alone takes roughly 5–6 hours. Keep a generous buffer and book the onward flight only after confirming the full route.

Morning

If your departure allows, visit Jaisalmer Folklore Museum near Gadisar Lake first; allow about an hour for its collection of local folk art and cultural objects. Opening hours can vary, so confirm directly before setting out, and keep this visit optional if your flight check-in window is tight. A taxi or auto-rickshaw can take you from the museum area toward the fort; agree the fare before you ride.

Coffee and departure

Head to Kuku Coffee Shop in the fort area for coffee and a light breakfast with old-city views; budget roughly ₹200–500 per person. Then collect your luggage and begin the journey to Chennai Airport. Don’t assume there’s a direct flight from Jaisalmer Airport: confirm the complete itinerary and connection before booking, and allow roughly 5–7 hours door to door for the flight itinerary, plus extra time for a connection or delays. If your confirmed route departs from Jodhpur Airport, the drive from Jaisalmer alone takes about 5–6 hours, so arrange a reliable car well ahead and leave a generous buffer; skip sightseeing if it could put your flight at risk.
