Start early at Sivagiri Mutt, a peaceful hilltop pilgrimage centre about 3–4 km northeast of Varkala town; allow roughly 1.5 hours for the memorials and grounds. An auto-rickshaw is the easiest way there—agree the fare before setting off, or expect a short ride to cost around ₹100–200 depending on your starting point. Check visiting hours locally before you go, as access to particular buildings can vary. Dress modestly and keep the visit quiet and unhurried.
Continue by auto to Janardanaswamy Temple near Temple Junction, allowing about an hour to explore the grounds. It’s one of Varkala’s most important historic temples; modest clothing is appropriate, and non-Hindus may be restricted from entering inner areas. Temple schedules can change around rituals, so ask at the entrance rather than assuming every section will be open. Leave time for a relaxed lunch around Temple Junction before heading down to the coast.
Spend about 1.5 hours at Papanasam Beach, walking the shoreline and taking in the view beneath the cliffs. The steps down from the cliff can be steep, and surf conditions vary—check local advice and stay out of the water if the waves are rough. Later, head up to Varkala Cliff and stroll the North Cliff promenade as the light softens; browse the small shops, but keep an eye on the time if you want to catch sunset. Finish with dinner at Darjeeling Cafe on North Cliff, where a sea-view table is a lovely way to round off the day. Allow about 1.5 hours and budget roughly ₹500–1,000 per person; sunset tables can be popular, so arrive early or expect a short wait.
