Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Start Delhi to Dehradun early, choosing either the train or the road after checking current schedules and traffic. Allow roughly 5–7 hours door to door: that includes getting to your Delhi departure point, waiting and boarding, and the onward transfer into Dehradun. By road, the usual route is via NH 709B and the Saharanpur–Roorkee corridor; congestion or roadworks can stretch the drive, so check conditions before setting off.
From town, take a cab or auto to the Forest Research Institute (FRI) campus in the FRI area; allow about 1.5–2 hours to see the grand colonial-era buildings and museums. Visitor access and museum hours can vary, so confirm arrangements before making the trip—don’t assume the museums will be open on your day. Then head to Kalsang on Rajpur Road for Tibetan and Asian dishes; budget around ₹400–800 per person. A cab between FRI and Rajpur Road is the simplest option.
A same-day return to Delhi is an exhausting squeeze: the two intercity legs alone take about 10–14 hours door to door, before the campus visit and meal. The sensible plan is to stay overnight in Dehradun, then travel back the following day by train or road, checking the latest timetable or traffic before you leave. If you must return the same day, arrange a late departure in advance and be prepared to shorten or miss your visit if the schedule or FRI access doesn’t line up.
