Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.
Take a taxi or shared cab from Guwahati to Shillong via NH6 (the old NH40). The drive usually takes about 3–4 hours, but allow extra time for pickup, traffic and the final drop-off; leaving early gives you the best chance of reaching Umiam Lake before continuing into town. Confirm where the cab will drop you and whether your accommodation can hold your luggage. If timing and weather cooperate, pause at the lake for 30–45 minutes to stretch and take in the reservoir views.
After arriving in central Shillong, stroll around Ward’s Lake for 45–60 minutes; check the current gate hours and entry fee before setting out, as these can change. Then take a taxi to Don Bosco Museum in Mawlai (roughly 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic). Allow 1.5–2 hours, and check its current opening arrangements in advance so you don’t make the trip on a day or at a time when it is closed.
Head back to Police Bazaar for a browse and a meal at a local Khasi restaurant; budget about ₹250–600 per person. Traffic can make the short ride from Mawlai take longer than expected, so leave a cushion. One important timing reality: the Guwahati–Shillong drive, these stops and a 3–4-hour return drive do not fit comfortably into the same day. An overnight stay in Shillong is strongly recommended; return to Guwahati the following morning by road, allowing 3–4 hours plus traffic and drop-off time. If you must return the same day, you’ll need to shorten or drop planned stops rather than count on completing this full schedule.
