Guwahati and Majuli Island Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Guwahati

Explore Guwahati

  1. Kamakhya Temple — Nilachal Hill; spend the morning here, allowing ~2–3 hours for the visit and possible queues. Temple access and any special entry arrangements should be checked in advance.
  2. Umananda Island — Brahmaputra River, near the city center; take a ferry from Umananda Ghat and allow ~1.5–2 hours, including the boat ride and time on the island.
  3. Assam State Museum — Dighalipukhuri; explore Assam’s art, history, and cultural collections for ~1.5 hours.
  4. Paradise Restaurant — Ulubari; try Assamese dishes at dinner, budgeting approximately ₹500–₹1,000 per person.

Morning

Start early for Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill: the approach road can get busy, and queues for darshan vary considerably, so allow 2–3 hours rather than planning around a quick visit. A taxi or app cab from central Guwahati usually takes around 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic; shared vehicles also run uphill from the base. Temple access and any special-entry arrangements can change, so check current guidance before setting out. There’s no fixed admission charge for general darshan, though optional services may cost extra.

Midday

Head back toward the river and take a ferry from Umananda Ghat to Umananda Island. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the crossing and a look around; ferry schedules and fares can vary, so confirm the next return boat before exploring. For lunch, keep it flexible near the city center—the timing of the ferry matters more than committing to a long sit-down meal.

Afternoon and evening

Continue to the Assam State Museum at Dighalipukhuri for about 1.5 hours among its collections on Assam’s art, history, and culture. Check the current opening hours before you go, as museum schedules can vary by day. From there, take a taxi or app cab to Paradise Restaurant in Ulubari for dinner; budget roughly ₹500–₹1,000 per person and try Assamese dishes. Allow around 20–35 minutes for the ride, depending on traffic.

Day 2
Majuli

Discover Majuli Island

Getting there from Guwahati
Early private taxi via Jorhat to Nimati Ghat, then ferry to Majuli and a local transfer onward (about 8–10 hours total; roughly ₹8,000–₹14,000 for the car, plus ferry and island transfer). Book the car through Savaari or MakeMyTrip, or arrange locally; buy ferry tickets at Nimati Ghat. Leave around 5–6am to allow for road delays and variable ferry schedules.
  1. Guwahati–Jorhat–Nimati Ghat–Majuli journey — Leave early; allow roughly 7–10 hours door to door, including the road transfer, ferry queues, crossing, and onward transfer on Majuli. Ferry timings and operations vary, so confirm locally and keep the day flexible.
  2. Kamalabari Ghat — Majuli; get oriented after arrival and allow ~30–60 minutes, depending on ferry and onward transport connections.
  3. Auniati Satra — Auniati; if you arrive with daylight and the satra is receiving visitors, allow ~1–1.5 hours to see its religious and cultural collections.
  4. Local Assamese meal near Kamalabari — Majuli; choose an open local eatery for dinner, budgeting approximately ₹200–₹500 per person.

This transfer leaves little reliable time for sightseeing on Majuli. For a fuller island visit, add an overnight between Guwahati and Majuli or extend the trip by at least one day.

Arrival on Majuli

The long transfer from Guwahati via Jorhat and Nimati Ghat, including ferry queues, the crossing and your onward island transfer, can take roughly 7–10 hours door to door. Treat today as a travel day: ferry operations and waiting times vary, so confirm the latest schedule locally and keep plans flexible. On arrival, take 30–60 minutes at Kamalabari Ghat to get oriented and arrange your local ride; don’t count on having much daylight left.

Late afternoon, if time allows

If you arrive with daylight and Auniati Satra is receiving visitors, allow about 1–1.5 hours for its religious and cultural collections. Ask locally about visitor access before setting out, as hours and entry arrangements can vary; if the crossing runs late, save the visit for another day rather than rushing.

Dinner

Stay near Kamalabari for a simple Assamese meal at an open local eatery. Budget around ₹200–₹500 per person and check what’s being served when you arrive, since smaller places may have limited evening hours. This transfer leaves little dependable time for sightseeing; for a fuller visit to Majuli, add an overnight between Guwahati and the island or extend the trip by at least a day.
