Mumbai Self-Catered Stay

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Mumbai

Stay in Mumbai

  1. Gateway of India — Colaba; begin with Mumbai’s iconic waterfront landmark and harbor views (evening, ~45 minutes; start after 7:04 PM).
  2. Colaba Causeway — Colaba; browse the lively street market for souvenirs and local atmosphere (evening, ~1 hour).
  3. Jehangir Art Gallery — Kala Ghoda; see contemporary Indian art in Mumbai’s historic art district (only if still open; otherwise visit the surrounding Kala Ghoda streets, ~45 minutes).
  4. Marine Drive — Nariman Point; finish with a relaxed promenade walk and the city skyline after dark (night, ~1 hour).
  5. Food shopping near Marine Lines — Marine Lines; pick up fresh produce, water, and cooking supplies for your self-catered stay (before shops close, ~30–45 minutes; carry your packed food and avoid restaurant dining).

Evening — Colaba Waterfront and Markets

Begin at Gateway of India after 7:04 PM, allowing about 45 minutes for the waterfront, harbor views, and evening lights. The monument itself is free; expect crowds, security checks, and some waiting around the promenade. From there, walk 10–15 minutes to Colaba Causeway for roughly an hour of browsing stalls selling accessories, textiles, souvenirs, and small household items. Bargaining is normal, but keep your belongings secure and avoid buying perishables here since you still have the rest of the evening ahead.

Continue by taxi or auto-rickshaw—around 10–20 minutes depending on traffic—to Jehangir Art Gallery in Kala Ghoda. Check the gallery’s posted closing time before leaving Colaba; if it is already closed, spend about 45 minutes walking the surrounding Kala Ghoda streets and viewing the district’s heritage buildings and public art instead. Gallery entry is generally free, though special exhibitions may have separate arrangements. From Kala Ghoda, take a taxi toward Marine Drive, allowing 20–30 minutes in evening traffic, and finish with an hour on the promenade at Marine Drive, where the skyline and sea breeze are best enjoyed after dark. Stick to the busier, well-lit sections and avoid going close to the seawall during rough weather.

Night — Supplies for Your Stay

Before settling in, make a final stop for 30–45 minutes at supermarkets and produce shops around Marine Lines. Pick up bottled water, fruit, vegetables, bread, snacks, and any cooking basics you did not pack; larger supermarkets are more reliable for packaged ingredients, while local produce shops may close earlier, so aim to arrive before about 9:00–10:00 PM. Keep your packed food with you rather than relying on restaurant stops, and use a taxi or app cab for the final ride back with your groceries. Allow extra time for traffic and shop queues, and keep chilled items for the end of the shopping stop.
