Three-Day Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Dharamshala

Arrival and central Dharamshala

  1. Dharamshala Cricket Stadium — HPCA Stadium area; enjoy mountain views and one of India’s most scenic cricket grounds, ~1 hour in the morning.
  2. War Memorial — Dharamshala Cantt; walk through the pine forest and memorial grounds, ~45 minutes.
  3. Kunal Pathri Temple — Kotwali Bazaar; visit this hillside temple and enjoy a quieter local Dharamshala experience, ~45 minutes.
  4. Kotwali Bazaar — Central Dharamshala; browse shops and sample local Tibetan and Himachali snacks, ~1 hour.
  5. Illiterati — McLeod Ganj approach; finish with books, mountain views, and a relaxed café meal, ~1.5 hours; approximately ₹500–₹900 per person.

Morning

If you arrive in Dharamshala by bus or taxi, allow roughly 30–60 minutes for the final transfer into town, depending on whether you come via Kangra or Gaggal Airport. Leave luggage at your hotel before heading first to Dharamshala Cricket Stadium in the HPCA Stadium area. Set aside about an hour for the scenic ground and mountain backdrop; entry is often around ₹30–₹50 when open, but access can be restricted for matches, team practice, or events, so check locally before setting out. From there, take a taxi or auto-rickshaw—about 10–15 minutes—to the War Memorial in Dharamshala Cantt.

Spend around 45 minutes walking among the pine trees and memorial plaques at War Memorial. The grounds are generally best visited during daylight, with a small entry charge sometimes collected; wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are uneven in places. Continue by taxi or auto toward Kunal Pathri Temple, allowing roughly 15–25 minutes depending on traffic. This hillside shrine is a quieter stop than the better-known attractions, and 45 minutes is enough to see the temple respectfully and enjoy the local atmosphere. Dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the inner area.

Afternoon and Evening

After Kunal Pathri Temple, continue to Kotwali Bazaar, the busiest central market area, usually a 10–15-minute ride downhill. Take an hour to browse woollens, household shops, and small Tibetan stalls, then pause for momos, thukpa, or Himachali snacks such as siddu. Keep some cash—small vendors may not accept cards—and expect roughly ₹150–₹350 per person for a casual meal. Finish at Illiterati, on the road toward McLeod Ganj, where you can settle in for about 1½ hours with books, valley views, and a relaxed café meal; budget approximately ₹500–₹900 per person. A taxi from central Dharamshala takes around 20–30 minutes, while an auto may be cheaper but less comfortable on the uphill road. Call ahead if possible, as café hours and seating can vary seasonally.

Day 2
McLeod Ganj

Exploring McLeod Ganj

Getting there from Dharamshala
Drive by taxi or auto-rickshaw via McLeod Ganj Road (25–40 minutes, approximately ₹400–₹800 by taxi or ₹150–₹300 by auto). Depart around 8:00–8:30am to reach the Tsuglagkhang Complex before the morning crowds. Book through your hotel, local taxi stand, or Uber/Ola where available.
  1. Tsuglagkhang Complex — Temple Road, McLeod Ganj; visit the Dalai Lama’s temple complex and museum area, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Namgyal Monastery — Temple Road; observe monks’ prayers and explore Tibet’s largest monastery outside Tibet, ~1 hour.
  3. Tibetan Museum — Tsuglagkhang Complex; learn about Tibetan history through photographs and exhibits, ~45 minutes.
  4. McLeod Ganj Market — Main Square; browse handicrafts, prayer flags, books, and Tibetan goods, ~1 hour.
  5. Chonor House Restaurant — Temple Road; have a Tibetan-influenced lunch or dinner in a peaceful garden setting, ~1.5 hours; approximately ₹800–₹1,400 per person.
  6. Bhagsu Waterfall — Bhagsu village; take the forested walk to the waterfall and return before dusk, ~2 hours.

Morning

Start around 8:00–8:30am for the short uphill transfer from Dharamshala to McLeod Ganj, allowing 25–40 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw. Ask to be dropped near Tsuglagkhang Complex on Temple Road; vehicles may need to stop slightly away from the entrance, and the central lanes become congested later in the morning. Spend about 1½ hours here, moving quietly through the temple grounds and museum area. Dress modestly, remove shoes where requested, and avoid photography during prayers or whenever signs prohibit it.

Continue on foot along Temple Road to Namgyal Monastery, roughly 5–10 minutes away, for about an hour. The atmosphere is especially rewarding when monks are in session, though prayer timings vary, so treat this as an opportunity rather than a guaranteed performance. Return to the Tibetan Museum within the complex for around 45 minutes; its photographs and exhibits provide useful context for what you have just seen. Entry fees are generally modest, but opening hours and occasional closures can change—check locally that morning.

Afternoon and Evening

Walk down toward McLeod Ganj Market at Main Square, allowing about an hour to browse prayer flags, Tibetan handicrafts, books, and woollens. Prices are often negotiable, but compare a few stalls before buying, particularly for singing bowls and handmade items. For lunch, settle into Chonor House Restaurant on Temple Road rather than rushing through the busy square. Its garden setting is calm, with Tibetan-influenced dishes and a typical spend of approximately ₹800–₹1,400 per person; allow 1½ hours.

From there, take a local taxi or auto-rickshaw toward Bhagsu village—usually 10–20 minutes depending on traffic—and leave at least two hours for Bhagsu Waterfall. The walk from the village is uneven and can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip; cafés line the approach, but the path becomes quieter beyond them. Visit in mid-afternoon and return before dusk, when the stone steps are poorly lit. A taxi back to Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj is easiest to arrange from Bhagsu village, and fares should be agreed before departure.

Day 3
Dharamshala

Final sights in Dharamshala

Getting there from McLeod Ganj
Drive by taxi or auto-rickshaw via McLeod Ganj Road (25–40 minutes, approximately ₹400–₹800 by taxi or ₹150–₹300 by auto). Depart after breakfast, around 8:00am, allowing time for the Dharamshala-area stops before continuing toward Dal Lake and Naddi. Arrange through your hotel or a local taxi stand; Uber/Ola availability is limited.
  1. St. John in the Wilderness Church — Forsyth Ganj; visit the historic neo-Gothic church in a deodar forest, ~45 minutes.
  2. Dharamkot — Upper McLeod Ganj; take a relaxed village walk with broad valley views, ~1.5 hours.
  3. Tibetan Children’s Village Handicraft Centre — nearby Dharamkot area; browse handmade Tibetan-style crafts and support local artisans, ~45 minutes.
  4. Dal Lake — Naddi road; enjoy a peaceful lakeside stop surrounded by cedar trees, ~45 minutes.
  5. Naddi View Point — Naddi; watch the Dhauladhar range and sunset over the Kangra Valley, ~1 hour.
  6. Tibet Kitchen — McLeod Ganj; end with momos, thukpa, or other Tibetan dishes, ~1 hour; approximately ₹400–₹800 per person.

Morning

Begin around 8:00am with a taxi from your hotel toward St. John in the Wilderness Church in Forsyth Ganj. The forested approach is especially atmospheric in the morning, with tall deodars around this 19th-century neo-Gothic church. Allow about 45 minutes, and dress for cool, shaded conditions; modest clothing is appreciated. Entry is generally free, though donations are welcome. From here, continue uphill by taxi toward Dharamkot, rather than trying to walk the full distance on the busy road.

Spend roughly 1½ hours wandering Dharamkot, following the quiet village lanes and forest-edge paths for wide views over the Kangra Valley. There are cafés along the way, but keep this stop unhurried—this is the best place today to slow down. Then walk or take a very short local ride to the Tibetan Children’s Village Handicraft Centre, where you can browse handmade Tibetan-style textiles, crafts, and small gifts. Allow about 45 minutes and carry cash, as smaller shops may not accept cards.

Afternoon and Evening

After lunch in the Dharamkot area, hire a taxi for the road toward Dal Lake and Naddi; this is more practical than relying on autos, particularly with the uphill sections and limited return traffic. Stop first at Dal Lake for around 45 minutes beside the cedar-lined water. It is a peaceful pause rather than a major sightseeing attraction, and conditions can be quiet or somewhat rustic depending on the season. Continue to Naddi View Point, allowing about an hour for the mountain panorama and sunset over the Kangra Valley. Start the return toward McLeod Ganj soon after sunset, since the road becomes dark and taxis are less easy to find. Finish at Tibet Kitchen for momos, thukpa, or Tibetan noodles; budget approximately ₹400–₹800 per person. Arrive before the main dinner rush if possible, and confirm the current closing time locally, as restaurant hours can change.
