5-Day Sikkim Motorcycle Route

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Gangtok

Arrival and ride briefing in Gangtok

  1. Bagdogra Airport–Gangtok transfer — Siliguri–Rangpo–Gangtok; allow ~4–5 hours door-to-door, including airport exit, traffic, and check-in. Collect motorcycles and complete permits/briefing after arrival.
  2. MG Marg — central Gangtok; take an easy evening walk and settle into the mountain atmosphere, ~1–1.5 hours.
  3. Baker’s Café — MG Marg; relaxed coffee, snacks, or light dinner, ~45 minutes; approximately ₹300–₹600 per person.
  4. Gangtok motorcycle safety briefing — hotel or rental base; check documents, riding gear, fuel, puncture kit, and weather plan, ~1 hour.

Morning & Arrival Transfer

From Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok, allow roughly 4–5 hours door to door, including baggage collection, arranging the vehicle or motorcycle handover, traffic through Siliguri, and the climb via Rangpo. The road is generally straightforward but can slow considerably near Siliguri and on hill sections, so keep the first day deliberately light. If you are collecting motorcycles, inspect the brakes, tyres, lights, mirrors, horn, luggage mounts, and insurance papers before leaving the airport area; confirm where the bikes can be parked at your Gangtok accommodation.

Afternoon: Check-in and Motorcycle Briefing

After checking in, take about an hour for the Gangtok motorcycle safety briefing at your hotel or rental base. Check that every rider has a valid licence and ID, and confirm the permit arrangements required for tomorrow’s ride. Pack waterproof layers, gloves, a puncture kit, basic tools, power banks, and cash, since fuel stations and reliable mobile coverage become less predictable in the mountains. Ask locally about current road conditions and whether Nathula Pass access is operating; entry is permit-dependent and can close because of weather or security restrictions.

Evening on MG Marg

Spend the evening walking along MG Marg, Gangtok’s pedestrian centre, rather than adding another ride after the long transfer. Allow 1–1½ hours to browse the shops, take in the mountain air, and get used to the slope and altitude. Stop at Baker’s Café on MG Marg for coffee, sandwiches, pastries, or a light dinner—budget approximately ₹300–₹600 per person. Opening hours can vary seasonally, so check locally after arrival; keep dinner easy and return to the hotel early, as tomorrow’s high-altitude ride requires a prompt start and good weather flexibility.

Day 2
Gangtok

Mountain ride to Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass

  1. Tsomgo Lake — East Sikkim; depart around 7:00 AM for the high-altitude lake, allowing ~2 hours each way and ~45 minutes at the shore. Protected-area permits are mandatory and should be arranged in advance.
  2. Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple — between Tsomgo and Nathula; stop for ~30–45 minutes, subject to road and security conditions.
  3. Nathula Pass — India–Tibet border; allow ~45–60 minutes, with access dependent on permits, weather, and military restrictions. Motorcycles may face local restrictions, so confirm the permitted vehicle arrangement beforehand.
  4. Taste of Tibet — MG Marg; return for momos and Tibetan dishes, ~1 hour; approximately ₹400–₹800 per person.
  5. MG Marg evening stroll — central Gangtok; keep the evening unhurried after the altitude ride, ~45 minutes.

Morning

Leave Gangtok around 7:00 AM in your permitted vehicle; although this is planned as a motorcycle day, confirm with your operator whether your bike can legally continue beyond Tsomgo Lake, as protected-area rules and military restrictions can require a registered taxi or 4WD. The climb takes roughly two hours each way, with winding roads, occasional checkpoints, and very limited facilities. Your protected-area permits must be arranged in advance through a registered Sikkim operator—carry your passport or government ID, permit copies, warm layers, water, and motion-sickness medication. At Tsomgo Lake, allow about 45 minutes for the lakeside views and photographs; avoid strenuous walking, as the altitude is around 3,750 metres. Local yak rides and snacks may be available seasonally, but agree on prices before committing.

Continue to Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, allowing 30–45 minutes for the visit, then proceed toward Nathula Pass. The road between the two can be affected by snow, landslides, security checks, or convoy restrictions, so treat the timing as approximate rather than guaranteed. Nathula Pass access is permit-dependent and may be suspended without much notice; allow 45–60 minutes if the gate is open, and follow instructions from security personnel. Keep your visit gentle and brief at this elevation—headache, dizziness, or nausea are signs to descend rather than push on. Do not assume your motorcycle can be taken to the pass; confirm the approved vehicle arrangement before departure.

Afternoon & Evening

Return to Gangtok after the border visit, usually reaching town in the mid-to-late afternoon depending on queues and road conditions. For lunch, stop at Taste of Tibet on MG Marg for momos, thukpa, or Tibetan-style rice dishes; budget approximately ₹400–₹800 per person, and expect a relaxed meal rather than fast service after the long mountain run. Keep the remainder of the day deliberately easy: stroll along MG Marg for about 45 minutes, browse the small shops, and warm up with tea at one of the cafés. Avoid alcohol tonight, drink plenty of water, and keep dinner light—the combination of altitude, cold, and a full day on winding roads can catch up with you later. Check the next day’s North Sikkim vehicle and permit arrangements with your hotel before turning in.

Day 3
Lachung

Scenic ride through Chungthang to Lachung

Getting there from Gangtok
Private 4WD/shared North Sikkim permit vehicle via Mangan–Chungthang (6–8 hours, approximately ₹5,000–₹8,000 per vehicle privately or ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person shared). Book through your hotel, a registered Sikkim tour operator, or the Sikkim Tourism portal. Depart around 7:00 AM; permits and road conditions are essential, and motorcycles may not be permitted on all sections.
  1. Gangtok–Chungthang–Lachung ride — North Sikkim Highway; depart around 7:00 AM and allow ~6–8 hours including fuel, roadworks, permits, photo stops, and lunch. Confirm current road status before departure.
  2. Seven Sisters Waterfalls — North Sikkim Highway near Singhik/Mangan; short roadside stop for ~30 minutes, subject to access and conditions.
  3. Singhik View Point — Singhik; panoramic Kanchenjunga viewpoint and a useful break, ~30–45 minutes.
  4. Lunch at a local restaurant in Mangan or Chungthang — North Sikkim; choose a busy, well-reviewed thali or noodle restaurant, ~45–60 minutes; approximately ₹200–₹500 per person.
  5. Lachung village walk — Lachung; explore the compact settlement after check-in, ~45 minutes.
  6. Hotel dinner in Lachung — Lachung; warm local meal and early rest, ~1 hour; approximately ₹300–₹700 per person.

Morning

Leave Gangtok around 7:00 AM in your permitted North Sikkim vehicle, allowing 6–8 hours overall to reach Lachung. This is a mountain-road day rather than a fast motorcycle ride: expect roadworks, broken stretches, military checks, and frequent photo stops. Confirm the route status and permits with your operator the previous evening, and carry water, snacks, warm layers, and cash—mobile coverage and card payments become unreliable beyond Mangan. Stop briefly at Seven Sisters Waterfalls, near Singhik/Mangan, for about 30 minutes if the roadside access is safe; in the monsoon or after heavy rain, keep well back from the edge.

Continue to Singhik View Point for a 30–45-minute break and wide Himalayan views when the weather is clear. The viewpoint is most rewarding before clouds build, so an early departure matters. Keep the stop flexible: mist is common, and the road can be slippery. Refuel and use the last dependable facilities around Mangan before continuing toward Chungthang.

Lunch & Arrival

Have lunch at a busy local restaurant in Mangan or Chungthang, choosing a fresh thali, rice-and-dal meal, or hot noodles rather than relying on a scenic roadside café. Budget ₹200–₹500 per person and allow 45–60 minutes; service is usually unhurried, and your driver should confirm the safest open option that day. From Chungthang, the road climbs through increasingly remote scenery, so expect the final stretch to take longer than the map suggests. On arrival in Lachung, check in, charge your phone, and ask the hotel about the next morning’s Yumthang Valley departure and local weather.

Evening

After settling in, take a gentle 45-minute walk through Lachung village rather than straying onto steep or unlit paths. The settlement is compact, with mountain views, prayer flags, small shops, and homes built along the valley road; temperatures drop sharply after sunset, so wear a proper jacket and shoes with grip. Return to the hotel for dinner—most properties serve a simple warm meal of rice, dal, vegetables, noodles, and sometimes local preparations—at approximately ₹300–₹700 per person. Eat early, keep the evening quiet, and be in bed by around 9:00 PM; the altitude, long drive, and early start for the next day’s excursion make rest more valuable than additional sightseeing.

Day 4
Lachung

Yumthang Valley excursion from Lachung

  1. Yumthang Valley — North Sikkim; leave Lachung around 6:30 AM for the valley, allowing ~1.5–2 hours each way and ~1.5 hours on-site. Protected-area permits and vehicle restrictions apply; confirm whether motorcycles can proceed.
  2. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary — Yumthang area; seasonal alpine scenery and a short nature walk, ~45 minutes, subject to access and conditions.
  3. Zero Point — beyond Yumthang; continue only if road, weather, permits, and vehicle rules allow; allow ~2–3 hours round trip from Yumthang. Extra altitude makes a conservative pace essential.
  4. Lunch at a local restaurant in Lachung — Lachung village; return for a hot meal and recovery break, ~1 hour; approximately ₹250–₹600 per person.
  5. Lachung monastery area — Lachung; quiet late-afternoon cultural stop, ~45 minutes, with access dependent on local conditions.
  6. Early dinner at the hotel — Lachung; keep the evening relaxed before the long return ride, ~1 hour; approximately ₹300–₹700 per person.

Morning

Leave Lachung around 6:30 AM in your permit-approved vehicle for Yumthang Valley. The mountain road takes roughly 1½–2 hours each way, and early departure gives you the best chance of clear views before clouds build over the valley. Keep warm layers, gloves, water, and basic snacks handy; roadside facilities are sparse, and the road can be rough or temporarily slowed by checks and repair work. Confirm with your operator that your motorcycle is allowed beyond Lachung—many visitors must use a registered local vehicle for protected-area travel.

Spend about 1½ hours at Yumthang Valley, walking only on marked or established paths and avoiding the riverbanks in slippery conditions. Continue to Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary for a gentle 45-minute nature walk if the gate is open and seasonal conditions are suitable; the rhododendron display is strongest in spring, while other months offer broad alpine scenery rather than guaranteed flowers. If weather, road conditions, permits, and vehicle restrictions all cooperate, continue to Zero Point. Treat this as an optional extension, allowing 2–3 hours round trip from Yumthang, and turn back promptly if visibility worsens or anyone develops headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual breathlessness.

Afternoon & Evening

Return to Lachung for lunch at your hotel or a simple local restaurant in the village, budgeting about ₹250–₹600 per person. A hot thukpa, momos, rice, or dal-bhaat is more useful than a heavy meal after the cold and altitude. Rest afterward rather than trying to add another long outing. In the late afternoon, make the short visit to the Lachung monastery area for around 45 minutes; keep voices low, ask before entering prayer spaces, and expect access to depend on local activity and weather.

Have an early dinner at your hotel, roughly ₹300–₹700 per person, and prepare clothes, documents, gloves, and luggage for tomorrow’s long descent. Ask the hotel to reconfirm the vehicle and departure time for the return toward Gangtok, since landslides, road repairs, and military restrictions can alter the route overnight. Mobile coverage can be unreliable, so settle any payment and download essential directions before turning in early.

Day 5
Gangtok

Return ride through Mangan to Gangtok

Getting there from Lachung
Private 4WD/shared permit vehicle via Chungthang–Mangan (6–8 hours, approximately ₹5,000–₹8,000 per vehicle privately or ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person shared). Arrange the return through your hotel or registered tour operator. Depart around 7:00 AM to reach Gangtok by mid-to-late afternoon; check for landslides and closures before leaving.
  1. Lachung–Chungthang–Mangan–Gangtok ride — North Sikkim Highway; depart around 7:00 AM and allow ~6–8 hours including road conditions, fuel, breaks, and lunch. Check for landslides or closures before leaving.
  2. Lunch at a local restaurant in Mangan — Mangan; practical mid-route meal, ~45–60 minutes; approximately ₹200–₹500 per person.
  3. Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park — Gangtok outskirts; decompress with an easy waterfall walk after arriving, ~1–1.5 hours.
  4. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology — Deorali, Gangtok; visit the museum and grounds, ~1 hour, subject to opening days and hours.
  5. The Coffee Shop at The Elgin Nor-Khill — central Gangtok; finish with coffee or a light meal, ~1 hour; approximately ₹500–₹1,000 per person.

Morning & Return Ride

Leave Lachung around 7:00 AM in your permit-approved 4WD or shared vehicle, allowing 6–8 hours to reach Gangtok via Chungthang and Mangan. Check road and landslide updates with your hotel before departure; the North Sikkim Highway can involve delays, rough stretches, military checks, and one-way traffic controls. Keep breakfast simple, carry water and snacks, and expect limited fuel and mobile coverage along the route.

Plan a 45–60-minute lunch stop at a local restaurant in Mangan, where a filling thali, noodles, momos, or rice meal generally costs ₹200–₹500 per person. Arriving in Gangtok by mid-to-late afternoon, allow time to check in and freshen up before taking a short taxi ride to Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park. Spend about an hour on the shaded paths and waterfall viewpoints; the park is best treated as a gentle decompression walk after the long mountain journey. Entry is usually modest, roughly ₹50–₹100, but confirm the day’s hours locally.

Evening in Gangtok

Continue downhill to Deorali for the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, allowing about an hour for its collection of Buddhist manuscripts, thangkas, ritual objects, and sculptures. Its opening schedule can vary, so check locally before setting out; photography restrictions may apply inside. Finish at The Coffee Shop at The Elgin Nor-Khill in central Gangtok, a comfortable place for coffee, cake, or a light meal after the road day. Budget approximately ₹500–₹1,000 per person, and use a local taxi for the short transfers rather than attempting to walk the steep roads after dark.
