Budget Singapore Itinerary from Chinatown

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Chinatown, Singapore

Chinatown and Marina Bay highlights

  1. Furama City Centre Hotel → Chinatown and Marina Bay — Chinatown to Marina Bay; walk via South Bridge Road or take a short MRT/taxi ride, ~20–30 minutes, departing around 9:00 AM. No parking is recommended in the dense downtown core.
  2. Maxwell Food Centre — Chinatown; sample affordable hawker dishes such as chicken rice and local drinks, late morning, ~1 hour (about S$5–12 per person).
  3. Telok Ayer Street and Thian Hock Keng Temple — Telok Ayer; explore historic shophouses and one of Singapore’s oldest Chinese temples, late morning, ~1 hour.
  4. Lau Pa Sat — Downtown Core; enjoy an inexpensive hawker lunch beneath the Victorian market hall, around 12:30 PM, ~1 hour (about S$8–15 per person).
  5. Merlion Park and Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade — Marina Bay; take classic skyline photos and walk toward the Helix Bridge, afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  6. Gardens by the Bay — Marina Bay; photograph the Supertree Grove by day, browse the outdoor gardens, and return after sunset for the illuminated display, ~4:30–8:00 PM. Outdoor areas are generally free; paid conservatories require separate tickets and may need advance booking.

Start from Furama City Centre Hotel around 9:00 AM. Chinatown and Marina Bay are close enough to link on foot: walk via South Bridge Road toward Maxwell Food Centre in roughly 15–20 minutes, or take a short taxi if the heat is unpleasant. There is little benefit to driving or parking downtown. Begin with an affordable brunch at Maxwell Food Centre—chicken rice, fish soup, or fresh sugar-cane juice usually costs about S$5–12 per person. Then wander Telok Ayer Street, looking at the restored shophouses, and visit Thian Hock Keng Temple, generally open during daytime hours; dress respectfully and check the entrance notices if a ceremony is taking place.

Continue on foot toward Lau Pa Sat, about 10–15 minutes away, for lunch around 12:30 PM. The Victorian market hall has plenty of inexpensive stalls, with a typical meal costing S$8–15. After lunch, walk toward Merlion Park and follow the Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade for skyline views, passing the waterfront toward the Helix Bridge; allow about 1½ hours including photo stops. The route is exposed, so carry water and use shaded areas when available.

From the Helix Bridge, continue to Gardens by the Bay—roughly 15–20 minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride if you want to save energy. Spend the late afternoon photographing the Supertree Grove and outdoor gardens, then stay through sunset so you can see the illuminated structures after dark, allowing roughly 4:30–8:00 PM overall. The outdoor areas are generally free; the conservatories require separate tickets and can sell out, so book ahead only if you want to add them. For a relaxed return, take a taxi back to Furama City Centre Hotel; otherwise walk to Bayfront MRT and take the Circle or Downtown Line toward Chinatown, allowing about 25–35 minutes door to door.

Day 2
Kampong Glam, Singapore

Little India and Kampong Glam

Getting there from Chinatown, Singapore
MRT via the Downtown Line: Chinatown station → Bugis station, then walk about 10–15 minutes to Kampong Glam. Around 20–25 minutes total, approximately S$1.50–2.00 using an EZ-Link card or contactless bank card; no booking platform needed. Depart after Chinatown Street Market, around 10:00–10:30 AM, before the late-morning Bugis visit.
Taxi/Grab, about 10–15 minutes and S$10–18 depending on traffic; book via Grab. Best if carrying shopping or traveling in a group.
  1. Chinatown Street Market — Chinatown; browse inexpensive souvenirs, crafts, and snacks before heading east, morning, ~1 hour.
  2. Bugis Street Market — Bugis; shop for budget clothing, gifts, and local snacks, late morning, ~1.5 hours.
  3. Tekka Centre — Little India; have a budget Indian or South Indian lunch at the hawker centre, around 12:30 PM, ~1 hour (about S$6–12 per person).
  4. Little India Arcade and Indian Heritage Centre area — Little India; browse colorful streets, spice shops, textiles, and small stores, afternoon, ~1.5 hours.
  5. Kampong Glam, Sultan Mosque, Arab Street, and Haji Lane — Kampong Glam; combine the mosque exterior, textile shops, cafés, murals, and independent boutiques, mid-to-late afternoon, ~2.5 hours.
  6. Kampong Glam → Furama City Centre Hotel — Chinatown; return by MRT from Bugis to Chinatown or by taxi, ~20–30 minutes, departing around 7:00 PM. Allow extra time for transfers and evening traffic; no parking is recommended.

Morning and transfer to Bugis

Begin at Chinatown Street Market around 9:00 AM for an easy hour of browsing souvenir stalls, snack shops, and small craft stores before the area gets busier. Keep purchases light, since you will be shopping again later. Around 10:00–10:30 AM, walk to Chinatown MRT Station and take the Downtown Line to Bugis Station; the ride and walk to Bugis Street Market take about 20–25 minutes, costing roughly S$1.50–2.00 with a contactless bank card or EZ-Link. A Grab or taxi is quicker with bags—usually about 10–15 minutes and S$10–18, traffic permitting—but there is little reason to drive or park.

Spend about 1½ hours at Bugis Street Market, where the best-value buys are casual clothing, phone accessories, small gifts, and local sweets rather than premium souvenirs. From there, walk or take a short bus ride toward Tekka Centre for lunch around 12:30 PM. Allow S$6–12 per person for a generous Indian or South Indian hawker meal; look for stalls with a steady local queue, and carry small notes or use the payment method displayed at the stall. After lunch, wander through Little India Arcade and the streets around the Indian Heritage Centre, browsing spice shops, flower garlands, textiles, and jewelry stores. The arcade and independent shops can keep irregular hours, so treat this as a relaxed neighborhood walk rather than a fixed shopping appointment.

Afternoon in Kampong Glam

In the mid-afternoon, walk or take the Downtown Line from Little India MRT Station to Bugis, then continue on foot into Kampong Glam. Allow roughly 15–25 minutes depending on your starting point. Begin around Sultan Mosque, admiring the gold domes and the surrounding historic streets; visitors entering the mosque should dress modestly and follow the posted visiting guidance, while the exterior is easy to see at any time. Continue along Arab Street for textiles, perfumes, carpets, and colorful shopfronts, then drift through Haji Lane for murals, small boutiques, and cafés. Two to three hours works well here—shops and cafés are generally livelier from late afternoon onward, and the area is especially pleasant once the heat softens. Keep some budget for a drink or dessert, but expect café prices to be higher than at the hawker centres.

Evening return to Chinatown

Around 7:00 PM, return from Bugis MRT Station to Chinatown MRT Station on the Downtown Line, then walk back to Furama City Centre Hotel; allow about 20–30 minutes door to door, including the walk and station transfers. Use Grab or a taxi instead if you are carrying shopping, but evening traffic can make the price and timing variable. If you finish earlier, you can simply return to the hotel rather than adding another attraction—the day already covers three distinct neighborhoods and is more enjoyable with a little unplanned browsing time.
