Singapore Hawker Food, Little India, and Marina Bay Highlights

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Chinatown and Marina Bay, Singapore

Chinatown Hawker Food, Temples, and Merlion Park Photos

  1. Furama City Centre Hotel → Sri Mariamman Temple (Chinatown) — begin with Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple and a gentle walk through Chinatown, morning, ~45 minutes.
  2. Chinatown Street Market (Chinatown) — browse souvenir stalls, snacks, and traditional shophouses, morning, ~1 hour.
  3. Chinatown Complex Food Centre (Chinatown) — eat an inexpensive hawker lunch with many stall choices, late morning or lunch, ~1 hour.
  4. Telok Ayer Street and Thian Hock Keng Temple (Telok Ayer) — see historic shophouses and one of Singapore’s oldest Chinese temples, early afternoon, ~1 hour.
  5. Merlion Park (Marina Bay) — photograph the Merlion, Marina Bay skyline, and waterfront, afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  6. Gardens by the Bay (Marina Bay) — take daytime garden photos and return to the Supertree Grove after dusk for the free light show, afternoon and evening, ~3 hours total.
  7. Marina Bay waterfront promenade and Helix Bridge (Marina Bay) — enjoy the skyline walk toward Marina Bay Sands, evening, ~1 hour.
  8. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands (Marina Bay) — browse souvenir shops and indoor displays, evening, ~45 minutes.
  9. Clarke Quay (Singapore River) — take a short nighttime riverside stroll before returning to Chinatown, evening, ~45 minutes.
  10. Chinatown Complex Food Centre (Chinatown) — have a second hawker-centre stop for dinner rather than paying restaurant prices in the riverfront area, evening, ~1 hour.

Morning

Start from Furama City Centre Hotel around 8:30 AM and walk through Chinatown to Sri Mariamman Temple, allowing roughly 10 minutes for the walk and 30–45 minutes at the temple. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where requested, and follow the temple’s photography rules. Continue through Chinatown Street Market for about an hour; stalls open at different times, so the area becomes livelier as the morning progresses.

Have lunch at Chinatown Complex Food Centre, allowing around S$6–12 per person for a filling hawker meal. Popular stalls can involve 20–30 minute queues at peak time, and finding a seat may take patience; use the local “chope” custom only with a small personal item and do not leave valuables unattended. This replaces the earlier Maxwell lunch so the day does not duplicate Chinatown’s hawker options.

Afternoon

Walk approximately 10–15 minutes from Chinatown Complex Food Centre to Telok Ayer Street and Thian Hock Keng Temple. Spend about an hour exploring the conserved shophouses and temple grounds, then continue toward Merlion Park by foot or a short MRT/taxi connection. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes door to door, depending on the weather and traffic. At Merlion Park, leave at least 45 minutes for photos from several angles; the waterfront gives clear views toward Marina Bay Sands and the skyline.

From Merlion Park, walk or take a short connection toward Gardens by the Bay. Allow around 30 minutes for the transfer and spend the afternoon around the outdoor gardens and Supertree Grove, taking advantage of the changing light for photographs. The outdoor areas are generally free; the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest require separate admission and advance booking is advisable if you decide to add them.

Evening

Stay at Gardens by the Bay until dusk for the free Garden Rhapsody at Supertree Grove. Showtimes can change, so check the official schedule on the day. Afterward, walk along the Marina Bay waterfront promenade and across Helix Bridge toward The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, allowing about an hour for the walk and skyline views, followed by roughly 45 minutes browsing indoors.

Continue to Clarke Quay by MRT or taxi for a short nighttime river stroll. Avoid making this a full restaurant stop, as dining there is much more expensive than hawker-centre food. Return to Chinatown Complex Food Centre for dinner if stalls are still serving; budget approximately S$6–15 per person. If the complex has wound down by the time you arrive, eat dinner earlier before visiting Clarke Quay. Lau Pa Sat is kept for the following itinerary day, where it is already planned as the hawker-centre dinner stop.

Day 2
Little India, Marina Bay, Chinatown, Singapore

Little India, Merlion Park, Lau Pa Sat, and Chinatown Food Tour

Getting there from Chinatown and Marina Bay, Singapore
MRT via SimplyGo/contactless payment (about 10–20 minutes between neighborhoods, approximately S$1.00–S$2.00 per ride). From Chinatown, take the Downtown Line to Little India; from Marina Bay, use the Downtown or Circle Line depending on the exact starting station. No advance booking is needed. Use Google Maps or the Singapore MRT app for the fastest station-to-station route.
Taxi or Grab (about 10–15 minutes, approximately S$8–S$18 depending on distance and traffic). Best if carrying luggage, traveling late at night, or making several short stops.
  1. Little India (Little India) — browse the colourful heritage streets, textile and jewellery shops, and temple-lined lanes; morning, ~1.5 hours.
  2. Tekka Centre (Little India) — have an inexpensive Indian or South Indian breakfast or early lunch at the hawker centre; late morning, ~1 hour.
  3. Chinatown Complex Food Centre (Chinatown) — sample Singaporean hawker dishes and explore one of the city’s largest food centres; midday, ~1.5 hours.
  4. Lau Pa Sat (Telok Ayer) — take a short MRT ride south for another hawker meal or snack in the historic market hall; mid-afternoon, ~1 hour.
  5. Merlion Park (Marina Bay) — photograph the Merlion and enjoy the waterfront skyline; late afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  6. Hotel 81 Bugis (Bugis) — return by MRT or taxi/Grab after the Marina Bay walk; evening, ~20–30 minutes.

Morning: Little India

After allowing realistic time for your journey in from Chinatown and Marina Bay, begin in Little India. From Hotel 81 Bugis, take the Downtown Line from Bugis to Little India; the train ride is only a few minutes, with additional time for walking through the stations. Allow about 1.5 hours to wander the colourful streets, browse textile and jewellery shops, and look at the shophouse façades. Keep this leisurely, as the neighbourhood is best enjoyed on foot rather than rushed between landmarks.

Continue to Tekka Centre, which is close to Little India MRT and easy to reach on foot. Have breakfast or an early lunch at the hawker centre, allowing roughly S$5–10 per person for a filling meal. Stall hours vary, and some vendors may be closed between meal periods, so treat the food options flexibly rather than planning around one specific stall. Dress respectfully if you pass through religious areas, and avoid photographing worshippers without permission.

Midday: Chinatown Complex Food Centre

Travel from Little India to Chinatown by MRT, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes door to door. At Chinatown Complex Food Centre, spend around 1.5 hours exploring the stalls and choosing one or two small dishes to share. A budget meal usually costs around S$5–12 per person, depending on drinks and how many dishes you order. Seating can be competitive during lunch, so avoid carrying more bags than necessary and be prepared to share a table.

This is your main Chinatown food stop for the day, so leave room for a relaxed walk through the surrounding streets before continuing. If you have already eaten at Tekka Centre, make this a lighter tasting stop rather than ordering a full second meal.

Afternoon and Late Day: Lau Pa Sat and the Merlion

From Chinatown Complex Food Centre, take the MRT toward the Telok Ayer area and allow approximately 15–25 minutes including walking and transfers. Stop at Lau Pa Sat for a drink, snack, or early dinner; budget roughly S$5–15 per person for casual hawker food. The historic market hall is a useful sheltered break, and you can keep this stop short if you are already full.

Finish at Merlion Park, reached from Lau Pa Sat in about 15–20 minutes on foot. The waterfront walk gives you good views of the skyline, so allow around 45 minutes for photographs and a pause by the bay. Late afternoon is more comfortable than the middle of the day, though the exact light will vary by season and weather. Afterward, return to Hotel 81 Bugis by MRT, taxi, or Grab; allow roughly 20–30 minutes, with taxi/Grab generally costing about S$8–15 depending on traffic and demand.
