Kanchipuram Travel Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Kanchipuram

Explore Kanchipuram

  1. Kailasanathar Temple — west Kanchipuram; begin with this serene early-morning Pallava temple, allowing ~1 hour. Opening access can vary, so verify locally before setting out.
  2. Ekambareswarar Temple — central Kanchipuram; explore one of the city’s grandest Shiva temples and its sacred mango tree, ~1.5 hours, with queue time reserved.
  3. Saravana Bhavan — near the central temple area; have a reliable South Indian breakfast or early lunch, approximately ₹200–₹400 per person, ~45 minutes.
  4. Kamakshi Amman Temple — central Kanchipuram; visit the city’s principal Shakti shrine, allowing ~1–1.5 hours and additional time for darshan queues.
  5. Varadharaja Perumal Temple — eastern Kanchipuram; finish at this expansive Vishnu temple complex, ~2 hours. Check dress rules, photography restrictions, and any special-entry booking requirements.

Morning

Begin at Kailasanathar Temple in west Kanchipuram, ideally around 7:00–8:00 a.m. This small, beautifully weathered Pallava temple is at its most peaceful before the larger temple crowds arrive; allow about an hour to walk around the sandstone shrines and courtyard. Opening access can vary with local पूजा schedules, so confirm at your hotel or with the temple caretaker before leaving. An auto-rickshaw from central Kanchipuram generally takes 10–15 minutes; agree on the fare beforehand, or use a local cab if you prefer a waiting vehicle.

Continue into the centre to Ekambareswarar Temple, one of Kanchipuram’s grandest Shiva temples. Set aside roughly 1½ hours, plus queue time, as the entrance process and darshan line can be slow. Dress modestly, remove footwear at the designated area, and expect some inner sections to restrict photography. Afterward, eat at Saravana Bhavan near the central temple area: it is a dependable choice for dosa, idli, vada, meals, and coffee, with breakfast or an early lunch costing about ₹200–₹400 per person. Allow 45 minutes, though service can slow during the late-morning rush.

Afternoon and Evening

Walk or take a short auto ride to Kamakshi Amman Temple, the principal Shakti shrine of Kanchipuram. Plan for 1–1½ hours here, including the darshan queue; timings and queue arrangements can change around pujas and festival days, so check locally rather than relying on a fixed schedule. From there, take an auto or cab east to Varadharaja Perumal Temple—typically 15–25 minutes depending on traffic—and reserve about two hours for the sprawling complex, its stone-pillared halls, and sacred tanks. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, check photography restrictions at the entrance, and ask whether any special-entry ticket or advance booking is required. This is a full but manageable temple day; keep cash for footwear stands, small offerings, and autos, and carry water because shade is uneven across the larger compounds.
