Two-Day Hubli to Badami Heritage Circuit

Day 1 · Sun, Oct 25
Kudalasangama

Savadatti and Kudalasangama

  1. Hubli–Savadatti–Kudalasangama drive — Hubli to Yellamma Gudda, then Kudalasangama; depart around 8:45 AM, allowing ~2 hours to Savadatti and another ~2 hours to Kudalasangama including a temple stop, traffic, and parking. Carry water and expect Sunday crowds; temple entry may involve queues.
  2. Shri Renuka Yellamma Temple — Yellamma Gudda, Savadatti; visit Karnataka’s major hilltop pilgrimage temple, morning to late morning, ~1.5 hours. Dress modestly and allow extra time for Sunday darshan.
  3. Kudala Sangama — Kudalasangama; see the Krishna–Malaprabha confluence and Basavanna’s samadhi, early afternoon, ~1.5 hours. The riverside setting provides a quieter heritage break after the temple.
  4. Kudala Sangameshwara Temple — Kudalasangama; explore the historic temple complex beside the confluence, afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  5. Vegetarian lunch near Kudalasangama — Kudalasangama town; choose a local Karnataka vegetarian hotel or temple-area eatery, around 2:00 PM, ~45 minutes, approximately ₹150–₹300 per person.
  6. Kudalasangama–Hubli return drive — Depart around 3:00–3:30 PM for the ~2-hour drive back to Hubli; allow extra time for Sunday traffic and a fuel break.

Morning

Leave Hubli around 8:45 AM by car for Yellamma Gudda, Savadatti, allowing roughly two hours. The approach is straightforward but the final hill road, temple traffic and parking can slow you down on a Sunday, so keep water in the car and expect to park below or near the temple access area before walking. At Shri Renuka Yellamma Temple, allow about 1½ hours for the hilltop complex and darshan; dress modestly, remove footwear where required and expect queues, particularly on a Sunday. Temple access is generally available from morning into the evening, but exact darshan arrangements and queue times can change with pilgrim volume.

Continue by road from Savadatti to Kudala Sangama, budgeting close to two hours including the temple stop, village traffic and a short break. Reach the riverside around early afternoon and spend about 1½ hours at the Krishna–Malaprabha confluence and Basavanna’s samadhi. The setting is calmer than Savadatti, with broad river views and a more reflective heritage atmosphere; avoid walking too close to the water, especially if levels are high.

Afternoon and Return

Visit Kudala Sangameshwara Temple beside the confluence for around 45 minutes. Its historic stone setting is best appreciated at an unhurried pace, though midday heat can be strong, so carry a hat and water. Have lunch around 2:00 PM at a simple vegetarian hotel in Kudalasangama town or near the temple area—expect Karnataka staples such as jolada rotti, rice meals and curd, at roughly ₹150–₹300 per person. Choices are basic and may close between meal services, so eat promptly rather than waiting too late.

Leave Kudalasangama around 3:00–3:30 PM for the roughly two-hour return to Hubli, using the same regional roads and allowing extra time for Sunday traffic and a fuel or tea stop. This timing should bring you back before evening, but do not plan a tight onward connection; road speeds vary and queues at Shri Renuka Yellamma Temple can easily extend the morning.

Day 2 · Mon, Oct 26
Badami

Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal and Mahakuta

Getting there from Kudalasangama
Private car/taxi via NH-50, approximately 2–2.5 hours and ₹2,500–₹4,000 one way. Depart around 4:00 AM to reach Badami by 6:30 AM for the planned early cave-temple visit. Book through a local Hubballi/Badami taxi operator or your accommodation; app-based rides may be unreliable in Kudalasangama.
Bus via Bagalkot: take a local bus or taxi to Bagalkot, then a KSRTC bus toward Badami. Allow roughly 4–5 hours total and ₹200–₹500, with connections and early-morning schedules requiring local confirmation on KSRTC or at the bus stand.
  1. Badami Cave Temples — Badami; start early, ideally around 6:30 AM, to explore the Chalukyan rock-cut caves and avoid heat, ~2 hours. Confirm current ticketing and opening arrangements locally.
  2. Agastya Lake and Bhootnath Temple — Badami lakeside; walk the shoreline and photograph the temple group beneath the red sandstone cliffs, morning, ~1 hour.
  3. Aihole Monument Complex — Aihole; drive ~35 km from Badami and spend late morning to early afternoon among the Durga Temple, Lad Khan Temple, and museum area, ~2 hours. Allow time for parking and ticket queues.
  4. Pattadakal Group of Monuments — Pattadakal; continue ~14 km from Aihole for the UNESCO-listed temples, mid-afternoon, ~1.5 hours. This is the day’s marquee heritage stop.
  5. Mahakuta Temples — Mahakuta; stop ~15 km from Pattadakal for the forested temple complex and sacred spring, late afternoon, ~45–60 minutes. Verify local access before visiting.
  6. Mahakuta–Hubli return drive — Depart by about 5:00 PM for the ~2.5–3-hour drive to Hubli, allowing for traffic, darkness, and a meal stop near the highway; this route is demanding as a same-day circuit, so an overnight near Badami or Pattadakal is preferable if possible.

Early Morning

Begin at Badami Cave Temples around 6:30 AM, before the sandstone cliffs start holding the day’s heat. Allow about two hours for the four rock-cut caves, including the steep steps and time to study the Vishnu, Shiva and Jain carvings. Confirm the current opening and ticket arrangements locally, as hours can change; carry water and wear shoes with a firm grip. From the caves, walk roughly 10–15 minutes toward Agastya Lake and Bhootnath Temple, following the lakeside paths for photographs and a quieter look at the temples beneath the red cliffs. Give this stop about an hour, but avoid entering the water near the sacred spring areas.

Late Morning and Afternoon

Have an early breakfast in Badami—your hotel is the safest option for a quick start—then drive about 35 km to the Aihole Monument Complex. Set aside two hours for the Durga Temple, Lad Khan Temple and the museum area; the site is spread out, so allow for parking, short walks and possible ticket queues. A simple packed lunch or a meal arranged through your driver is more practical than searching for a restaurant between monuments. Continue approximately 14 km to the Pattadakal Group of Monuments, where an hour and a half gives you time for the major temples and inscriptions without rushing. Keep your ticket, hat and water handy, and check local closing time before setting out—heritage-site hours and ticket counters are not always perfectly consistent.

Late Afternoon and Return to Hubli

Drive about 15 km to the shaded Mahakuta Temples for a 45–60-minute visit. The forested setting and sacred spring make this a gentler final stop, but verify local access and temple timings before arriving, particularly on a Monday. Depart by around 5:00 PM for Hubli, allowing 2½–3 hours via the main highway route, with darkness, village traffic and a meal stop near the highway in mind. This is a demanding circuit after an early start; if you have any flexibility, staying near Badami or Pattadakal would make the heritage visits much more comfortable.
