Delhi to Auli Mountain Escape

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Auli

Journey to Auli

  1. Delhi–Auli road journey — Delhi to Auli via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Joshimath, and Vishnuprayag; depart around 4:00–5:00 AM for roughly 12–14 hours by private car, including breaks. Start with a full tank, carry food and motion-sickness medication, and confirm the mountain-road and weather conditions; arrival transfer from Joshimath to Auli may add 45–60 minutes.
  2. River-view lunch stop near Rishikesh — Rishikesh bypass or Devprayag route; take a 45–60-minute meal and rest break after the initial drive, budgeting approximately ₹250–₹600 per person.
  3. Devprayag Sangam — Devprayag; pause for 30–45 minutes to see the Alaknanda–Bhagirathi confluence, provided road conditions and daylight permit.
  4. Joshimath local market — Joshimath; stretch your legs and purchase water, snacks, and essentials for Auli, allowing 30–45 minutes before the final ascent.
  5. Auli sunset viewpoint — Auli; if arriving before dark, spend 30–45 minutes taking in the Himalayan panorama near the accommodation rather than attempting a longer trail.
  6. Return journey: Auli to Delhi — Not practical on the same day after this drive; allow an overnight stay in Auli and schedule the return for the following morning, requiring approximately 12–14 hours door-to-door.

Early Morning — Delhi to the Mountains

Leave Delhi around 4:00–5:00 AM in a private car, with a full tank and an experienced hill driver. The practical route runs through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Joshimath, and Vishnuprayag, taking roughly 12–14 hours including breaks; allow an additional 45–60 minutes from Joshimath up to Auli. Expect traffic leaving Delhi, winding roads after Rishikesh, and possible delays from roadworks, weather, or mountain traffic, so check the Uttarakhand road and weather conditions before setting out. Carry packed breakfast, water, motion-sickness medication, warm layers, and cash; do not rely on finding a proper meal late in the journey.

Late Morning to Afternoon — Rishikesh, Devprayag, and the Alaknanda Valley

Take a 45–60-minute river-view meal and rest stop around the Rishikesh bypass or on the Devprayag route, budgeting approximately ₹250–₹600 per person. Continue to Devprayag Sangam, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganges; allow 30–45 minutes for the viewpoint and a short leg stretch, but keep this stop flexible if the drive is running late or daylight is fading. The roads beyond Devprayag are scenic but slow, with frequent bends and limited overtaking, so avoid adding extra sightseeing today.

Evening — Joshimath to Auli

At Joshimath, spend 30–45 minutes in the local market buying water, snacks, basic medicines, and anything needed for the night in Auli. Confirm the final ascent and accommodation directions with your driver, as the road can be narrow and conditions may change; the cable car or local transport should not be assumed available without checking current operating status. If you reach Auli before dark, take a brief 30–45-minute sunset pause near your accommodation for the Himalayan panorama rather than attempting a longer trail. Keep the evening simple and rest after the drive; mountain temperatures drop quickly, even outside winter.

Return Planning

Returning from Auli to Delhi the same day is not practical after this journey. Stay overnight in Auli and leave the following morning, again budgeting approximately 12–14 hours door-to-door via Joshimath, Rudraprayag, Devprayag, and Rishikesh. A very early departure is advisable, with fuel and breakfast arranged in advance; treat any sightseeing near the route home as optional rather than fixed.
