Nainital Travel Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Nainital

Nainital highlights

  1. Naina Devi Temple — Mallital, northern end of Naini Lake; begin with Nainital’s landmark lakeside temple, allowing ~45 minutes in the morning.
  2. Boat Ride on Naini Lake — Mallital boat stand; enjoy a scenic rowboat or paddleboat outing, ~45–60 minutes, subject to weather and availability.
  3. Snow View Point — Sher-ka-Danda hill; take the ropeway or a local taxi for panoramic Himalayan views, ~1.5 hours including transport and queues.
  4. Eco Cave Gardens — Mallital; explore the interconnected natural caves and gardens, ~1 hour in the afternoon.
  5. Embassy Restaurant — Mall Road; have a relaxed Kumaoni, North Indian, or continental meal, ~1 hour; approximately ₹400–800 per person.
  6. Mall Road — The Mallital–Tallital lakeside promenade; finish with an easy evening stroll and shopping, ~1–1.5 hours.

Morning

Start at Naina Devi Temple at the northern end of Naini Lake, when the waterfront is quieter and the temple atmosphere is especially pleasant. Allow about 45 minutes, with a little extra for the entrance queue and removing shoes. Temple timings can vary, so confirm locally; modest dress is appreciated. From here, walk directly to the nearby Mallital boat stand for a 45–60-minute boat ride on Naini Lake. Choose a rowboat for a slower, quieter outing or a paddleboat for a more active ride; boats are weather- and availability-dependent, and morning is usually the best window before wind picks up.

Midday and Afternoon

Head uphill to Snow View Point by the ropeway from Mallital or by local taxi if the ropeway queue is long or services are weather-affected. Keep roughly 1½ hours for the ride, queues, viewing platforms, and return; Himalayan visibility is never guaranteed, so cloudy conditions may mean better value in simply enjoying the forested slopes. Return toward Mallital for Eco Cave Gardens, where interconnected caves, narrow passages, and small landscaped sections take about an hour. Wear shoes with a good grip—the cave floors can be uneven and damp. In the afternoon, settle into Embassy Restaurant on Mall Road for Kumaoni, North Indian, or continental food; budget approximately ₹400–800 per person, and allow an hour rather than rushing through the meal.

Evening

Finish with an unhurried walk along Mall Road, following the lakeside promenade between Mallital and Tallital. This is the right time for local snacks, woollens, candles, and small handicrafts, though prices vary and bargaining is modest in established shops. The road becomes busy in the evening, so explore on foot rather than trying to move by car; taxis are more useful for returning to accommodation, while the central promenade is generally best enjoyed without transport. Keep valuables secure in the crowd, and check the local traffic or pedestrian-hour restrictions before arranging a pickup.
