Chikmagalur and Coorg Travel Itinerary

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur

  1. Mullayanagiri Peak — Mullayanagiri, morning, ~2 hours; Karnataka’s highest peak offers dramatic mountain views, with a short final walk from the parking area.
  2. Baba Budangiri — Baba Budangiri, late morning, ~1.5 hours; Explore the distinctive ridgelines and viewpoints along the scenic mountain road.
  3. Jhari Waterfalls — Near Attigundi, afternoon, ~2 hours; Take the permitted local jeep transfer to this forest-framed waterfall and allow time for the approach.
  4. Town Canteen — Chikmagalur town, early evening, ~1 hour; Enjoy South Indian comfort food and coffee at approximately ₹200–₹400 per person.
  5. Hirekolale Lake — West of Chikmagalur, sunset, ~1 hour; End with a peaceful lakeside panorama of the surrounding hills.

Morning

Start early for Mullayanagiri Peak, leaving Chikmagalur around 6:00–6:30am so you reach the mountain road before weekend traffic and cloud build-up. The drive takes roughly 45–60 minutes, with narrow bends near the top; parking is limited and the final walk from the parking area is short but steep. Allow about two hours for the summit, where the views are best before mist rolls in. There is usually no formal entry fee, though parking and small local charges may apply. Continue by car along the scenic ridge road to Baba Budangiri, around 30–45 minutes away, and spend about 1½ hours at the viewpoints and distinctive grass-covered ridgelines. Roads can be uneven, so keep some water and a light jacket handy.

Afternoon

Have a simple lunch at a roadside restaurant around Attigundi before heading to Jhari Waterfalls. The private road to the falls is generally accessed via permitted local jeeps rather than ordinary cars; expect roughly ₹600–₹1,000 per jeep depending on sharing and current local rates, plus waiting time. The jeep ride and forest approach can take 30–45 minutes each way, so allow two hours overall. Wear shoes with good grip and avoid climbing directly beneath the cascade, especially after rain. Return to town in the mid-afternoon and leave a little unscheduled time to rest—this mountain loop is more tiring than its distances suggest.

Evening

For an early dinner, go to Town Canteen in Chikmagalur town, a relaxed local stop for dosa, idli, vada, rice dishes and strong filter coffee; budget around ₹200–₹400 per person. It is best visited before the main dinner rush, and opening hours can vary, so check locally or through your hotel. Afterward, drive about 10–12 km west to Hirekolale Lake—roughly 25–35 minutes depending on traffic—for sunset. There is no elaborate visitor infrastructure, so carry water, allow time for the narrow approach road and leave before it becomes fully dark. The lake is especially peaceful as the hills turn into silhouettes, but do not expect reliable lighting or facilities after sunset.

Day 2
Madikeri, Coorg

Coorg

Getting there from Chikmagalur
Private taxi or self-drive via Hassan–Sakleshpur–Somwarpet (about 4.5–5.5 hours, ₹3,500–₹5,500 for a one-way taxi). Depart around 5:30–6:00am to reach Madikeri by late morning for Abbey Falls and the town sights. Book through a local Chikmagalur taxi operator, hotel, or MakeMyTrip cab.
Bus via Hassan: Chikmagalur to Hassan, then Hassan to Madikeri (roughly 6–8 hours total, ₹400–₹900). Check KSRTC schedules and book on the KSRTC website/app; connections may be inconvenient, so this is less suitable for the planned morning activities.
  1. Abbey Falls — Madikeri outskirts, morning, ~1.5 hours; Walk through lush forest to Coorg’s best-known waterfall, allowing extra time for parking and the steps.
  2. Madikeri Fort — Madikeri town centre, late morning, ~1 hour; Visit the historic fort complex and its compact museum.
  3. Raja’s Seat — Madikeri town centre, midday, ~1 hour; Take in sweeping valley views from this landscaped sunset viewpoint.
  4. Coorg Cuisine — Madikeri, lunch, ~1 hour; Try regional pandi curry, kadambuttu, and other Kodava dishes for approximately ₹400–₹800 per person.
  5. Mandalpatti View Point — Near Galibeedu, afternoon, ~3 hours; Ride a local jeep over rough terrain to expansive Western Ghats vistas; confirm weather and jeep availability locally.

Morning

After the early transfer from Chikmagalur, head first to Abbey Falls, about 8 km from Madikeri. Allow roughly 1½ hours here: parking can take time, and the forest path includes steps that become slippery in wet weather. The waterfall is usually best visited in the morning, before the larger sightseeing crowds arrive; entry is generally around ₹20–₹30, though fees and access can change with conditions. Wear shoes with good grip and avoid crossing barriers—the flow can be strong after rain.

Return to town for Madikeri Fort, where the compact museum and old fort buildings make for an easy one-hour visit, followed by Raja’s Seat, a short drive or walk away. The viewpoint is more than a sunset stop: midday often gives clearer valley visibility than late afternoon, while the landscaped grounds are pleasant for a slow wander. Allow about ₹10–₹20 for entry at each attraction, and leave the car in a central lot rather than trying to move it between every town sight.

Lunch and Afternoon

Have lunch at Coorg Cuisine in Madikeri, ordering local specialities such as pandi curry with kadambuttu, bamboo-shoot preparations, or vegetarian Kodava dishes. Budget approximately ₹400–₹800 per person; portions are usually generous, so two people can share several dishes. From central Madikeri, arrange a local jeep for Mandalpatti View Point, allowing about three hours door to door. The final stretch is rough and is normally covered by a designated 4WD jeep rather than a regular taxi; expect roughly ₹1,500–₹2,500 per jeep, commonly shared by up to six passengers, depending on season and negotiation.

Confirm jeep availability and road conditions locally before leaving, especially in heavy rain or low cloud. Mandalpatti is most rewarding when the ridges are visible, but weather can change quickly—if the viewpoint is completely clouded over, do not linger simply because you have paid for the ride. Carry water, a light jacket, and cash, as mobile signal and card payments are unreliable around the viewpoint.
