Four-Day Jaipur to Jaisalmer and Sam Dunes Road Trip

Dates are flexible. This day-by-day plan is provisional until you choose exact travel dates.

Day 1
Jaisalmer

Travel from Jaipur to Jaisalmer

  1. Jaipur–Jaisalmer road transfer — Jaipur to Jaisalmer; depart around 5:00 AM for the approximately 11–12-hour drive, including meal, fuel, and rest stops. Use a permitted 16-seat tempo traveller or two vehicles; confirm driver hours, luggage space, and hotel parking.
  2. Highway lunch stop near Jodhpur/Phalodi — en route; allow ~45 minutes at a clean, well-reviewed highway restaurant, approximately ₹300–600 per person.
  3. Jaisalmer hotel check-in and rest — Jaisalmer Fort or Sam Road area; arrive approximately 5:00–7:00 PM, allowing time for unloading and check-in.
  4. Gadisar Lake — near the city entrance; enjoy a sunset lakeside walk and boat ride if operating, ~1 hour.
  5. The Trio — inside Jaisalmer Fort; dinner with fort views, approximately ₹700–1,500 per person, ~1.5 hours.

Early Morning: Jaipur to Jaisalmer

Leave Jaipur around 5:00 AM in a permitted 16-seat tempo traveller, or split the group between two vehicles if luggage and comfort are concerns. The drive via Ajmer, Beawar, Jodhpur and Phalodi is roughly 11–12 hours including breaks, so confirm the vehicle’s luggage capacity, driver-hour limits, permits and hotel parking before departure. Start with a full tank and carry water, light snacks and motion-sickness medication; the final desert stretch is long and has fewer reliable services.

Plan a proper 45-minute lunch near Jodhpur or Phalodi, choosing a clean, well-reviewed highway restaurant rather than trying to coordinate a large group at a small dhaba. Budget approximately ₹300–600 per person. With fuel, tea, restroom and meal stops, expect arrival in Jaisalmer between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. If staying inside Jaisalmer Fort, check in advance whether the vehicle can approach the property—many lanes are narrow and some hotels arrange a transfer from an outer parking area. Hotels around Sam Road are easier for large vehicles but less convenient for an evening in the old city.

Evening: Lake and Fort Dinner

After check-in and a short rest, go to Gadisar Lake for a relaxed sunset walk, allowing about an hour. The lakeside is generally most atmospheric around sunset; boat rides are weather- and operator-dependent, so treat them as optional rather than guaranteed. Keep the group together near the main entrance and allow extra time for unloading if the tempo traveller must remain at a designated parking area.

Continue to The Trio inside Jaisalmer Fort for dinner, usually allowing 1½ hours and budgeting roughly ₹700–1,500 per person. Reserve ahead for a group of 16 and request an outdoor table with fort views, but keep expectations flexible because service can be slower with a large party. After dinner, return directly to the hotel and rest—the next day is best started early for sightseeing, and this first day is primarily a long road transfer.

Day 2
Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer heritage and local sightseeing

  1. Jaisalmer Fort — Sonar Quila; explore the living fort, palace lanes, and viewpoints, ~2 hours. Start early to avoid heat and crowds.
  2. Jaisalmer Government Museum — inside the fort area; see regional history and desert artifacts, ~45 minutes.
  3. Killa Bhawan Lodge rooftop restaurant — Jaisalmer Fort; lunch with panoramic views, approximately ₹500–1,200 per person, ~1 hour.
  4. Patwon Ki Haveli — central Jaisalmer; visit the richly carved merchant mansions, ~1 hour.
  5. Nathmal Ki Haveli — near Patwon Ki Haveli; admire its ornate façade and interiors, ~30–45 minutes.
  6. Bada Bagh — approximately 10 km north of town; see the royal cenotaphs in the late afternoon, ~1 hour. Arrange a large-vehicle parking plan in advance.

Morning

Start early at Jaisalmer Fort, ideally around 7:30–8:00 AM, before the sandstone heats up and the lanes become crowded. Allow about two hours to wander through the living fort, including the palace lanes and viewpoints. With 16 people, have the tempo traveller drop you near the main approach and use a local guide or split into two smaller groups—the narrow lanes are not practical for a large group. The fort remains an inhabited neighborhood, so keep voices low and avoid blocking doorways. Follow this with about 45 minutes at the Jaisalmer Government Museum, checking its same-day opening hours locally because museum timings can vary.

Lunch and Heritage Walk

Have lunch at the rooftop restaurant at Killa Bhawan Lodge, where the views across the golden city are the main attraction. Budget roughly ₹500–1,200 per person, and call ahead to reserve a table for your group; service can be unhurried, so allow a full hour. After lunch, take a short vehicle transfer or walk downhill toward Patwon Ki Haveli. Spend around an hour examining the carved façades and interiors, then continue on foot to Nathmal Ki Haveli, about 5–10 minutes away. Allow 30–45 minutes here, and be cautious with unofficial guides who may steer you toward commission-based shops.

Late Afternoon and Sunset

Around 3:30–4:00 PM, leave the old city for Bada Bagh, roughly 10 km north, allowing 25–35 minutes by tempo traveller depending on traffic. Confirm the group entry fee and parking arrangement with your driver beforehand, as the approach and parking area are more comfortable for a large vehicle when organized in advance. The cenotaphs look best in the softer late-afternoon light; allow about an hour, but do not linger after dark because facilities are limited. Return to your hotel afterward for dinner and rest before the early desert departure tomorrow.

Day 3
Sam Dunes

Sam Dunes desert experience

Getting there from Jaisalmer
Private minibus/tempo traveller via Sam Road, with stops at Kuldhara and Desert National Park (about 45–60 minutes direct; ~₹2,500–5,000 per vehicle one way, more with waiting/stops). Book through your hotel or a local Jaisalmer operator. Depart around 8:00 AM to complete sightseeing before the sunset dune activities and overnight camp.
Private cars/SUVs, typically ~₹1,500–3,000 per vehicle one way; arrange return or overnight parking with the desert camp.
  1. Kuldhara Abandoned Village — on the Jaisalmer–Sam road; explore the atmospheric historic settlement, ~1 hour.
  2. Desert National Park, Sam sector — Sam Road; take a licensed wildlife excursion for desert landscapes and possible wildlife sightings, ~1.5–2 hours. Confirm vehicle permits and seasonal access.
  3. Sam Sand Dunes — Sam; camel ride or jeep safari around sunset, ~1.5 hours. Book operators and vehicles ahead for a 16-person group.
  4. Desert camp dinner and cultural program — Sam Dunes; enjoy Rajasthani food, folk music, and dance, approximately ₹1,000–2,500 per person depending on the camp, ~2 hours.
  5. Overnight desert camp — Sam Dunes; stay in pre-booked tents, with warm layers recommended for November nights.

Morning: Jaisalmer to the desert route

Leave Jaisalmer around 8:00 AM in your pre-booked tempo traveller or minibus, allowing roughly 45–60 minutes of direct driving to Sam Dunes, plus waiting time for the day’s stops. With 16 people, confirm one vehicle with enough luggage space, drinking water and working air-conditioning; avoid relying on several local taxis arriving separately. Your first stop is Kuldhara Abandoned Village, about 20–25 minutes from Jaisalmer on the Sam Road. Spend around an hour walking through the stark ruins and reading the site information before the heat builds. Entry is generally modest, but timings and ticket arrangements can change, so ask your driver or hotel to reconfirm locally.

Continue toward the Desert National Park, Sam sector for a licensed excursion of around 1.5–2 hours. This is more about open desert scenery, dunes and the chance of spotting desert-adapted wildlife than guaranteed sightings. Have your operator confirm the permitted vehicle, entry fee, guide and seasonal access in advance; a 16-person group may need more than one approved safari vehicle. Carry hats, sunscreen and closed shoes, and bring packed snacks rather than losing time searching for lunch along the Sam Road.

Afternoon and sunset: Sam Sand Dunes

After the park, reach your pre-booked Sam Sand Dunes camp by early afternoon, check in and rest through the hottest part of the day. Most camps provide lunch or can arrange a simple vegetarian meal, but confirm this before departure from Jaisalmer. Around 4:00–4:30 PM, head out for the sunset activity: choose either a camel ride or a jeep safari, usually lasting about 1.5 hours. For a large group, reserve the camels or jeeps together and confirm whether the quoted rate includes dune access, waiting time and return to camp. The best light is usually shortly before sunset; take only essentials, as the sand and wind make phones and loose bags awkward.

Evening: Camp dinner and overnight stay

Return to camp after sunset for the desert camp dinner and cultural program, generally lasting about two hours. Expect a buffet-style Rajasthani meal, folk music and dance, with typical pricing of approximately ₹1,000–2,500 per person depending on the camp and inclusions. November nights can become surprisingly cold, so bring a fleece or jacket, socks and a shawl even if the afternoon feels warm. Confirm that all 16 guests have tents, bedding, attached bathrooms if required, and a clear pickup plan for the next morning; remain overnight at the Sam Dunes camp rather than attempting a late return to Jaisalmer.

Day 4
Jaisalmer

Tanot Temple and Longewala before returning to Jaipur

Getting there from Sam Dunes
Pre-booked private tempo traveller/minibus from the camp (about 45–60 minutes; ~₹3,000–6,000 per vehicle, including early pickup). Book through the camp or hotel. For the planned Tanot–Longewala visit, depart Sam around 4:30–5:00 AM; this is essential for the 5:00 AM Tanot schedule and border-area sightseeing.
Private SUVs/cars, about ~₹2,000–3,500 per vehicle, but a larger vehicle is more practical for a 16-person group and luggage. Confirm the route, permits/ID requirements, and return timing with the operator.
  1. Tanot Mata Temple — Tanot, approximately 120 km from Jaisalmer; depart around 5:00 AM for the ~2.5–3-hour drive, allowing time for security checks and temple visit. Carry identification and follow border-area restrictions.
  2. Tanot War Museum — beside Tanot Temple; view the 1965 and 1971 war exhibits, ~45 minutes, subject to opening and security conditions.
  3. Longewala War Memorial — Longewala; continue approximately 1–1.5 hours by road and allow ~1 hour for the memorial and battlefield exhibits. Confirm current visitor access before departure.
  4. Lunch near Ramgarh or Jaisalmer — en route back; allow ~45 minutes at a clean local restaurant, approximately ₹250–500 per person.
  5. Jaisalmer–Jaipur return transfer — depart Jaisalmer by late morning or early afternoon for the approximately 11–12-hour road journey to Jaipur, reaching late night or after midnight. This route is not realistically compatible with a same-day Tanot–Longewala visit unless the group accepts a very late arrival; add one night in Jaisalmer or return to Jaipur the following morning.

Early Morning: Sam Dunes to Tanot

Leave your camp at 4:30–5:00 AM in the pre-booked tempo traveller or minibus. The drive to Tanot Mata Temple takes around 2½–3 hours on a dark, sparsely serviced road, so carry water, light snacks, and warm layers. Keep original government photo ID with the group leader; this is a sensitive border area, and security checks or photography restrictions can change. For 16 people, budget roughly ₹3,000–6,000 for the vehicle transfer, confirming the route and waiting charges with the camp in advance.

At Tanot Mata Temple, allow about 45–60 minutes for darshan and the temple grounds, then visit the adjacent Tanot War Museum for approximately 45 minutes. Both visits are subject to security conditions and operating hours, so ask your driver or camp to reconfirm access the previous evening. Continue by road to the Longewala War Memorial, usually another 1–1½ hours; allow around an hour for the exhibits and battlefield displays. Do not assume entry is guaranteed—confirm current visitor access before setting out, and follow all instructions about photography and restricted areas.

Midday: Return via Ramgarh

After Longewala, begin the return toward Ramgarh and Jaisalmer. Stop at a clean local restaurant near Ramgarh for a simple lunch—thali, dal, roti, and tea are the safest choices for a large group—allowing about 45 minutes and ₹250–500 per person. Keep this stop practical rather than leisurely: with the early departure and desert driving, everyone should carry extra water, and the driver should have a proper break before the onward journey.

Important Return-Trip Reality

A same-day Jaisalmer–Jaipur road transfer after Tanot and Longewala is not realistic for a 16-person group: the return to Jaisalmer itself takes several hours, while the onward drive to Jaipur is approximately 11–12 hours, making arrival very late at night or after midnight. The safer plan is to add one night in Jaisalmer and leave early the following morning via Jodhpur, Beawar, and Ajmer, budgeting a full day door to door with meal and fuel stops. If the return must happen today, drop Longewala and leave Jaisalmer as soon as possible after the border excursion—but even then, expect a very late arrival and confirm driver duty limits, vehicle permits, and hotel check-in before departure.
